turkey with a bow?
« on: Oct 20, 2010, 07:29:03 PM »
This morning while in stand I saw some turkeys. I saw hens but could hear a gobbler going like crazy at first light. I guess my question is considering i am deer hunting can I take one with my regular muzzy heads or do I NEED special broadheads? also my bow is about 60-65 lbs is this a problem?   I am going to the same stand in the am and i would not mind whacking a turkey if the shot presents itself. This stand is overlooking a huge scrape in a line of 5 or 6 that I found   so if my deer set-u will not work for turkeys I always got the buck making these scarpes to fall back on  ::)

That setup will work fine, no problem at all just put your pin where the wingbone connects to the body and stick him.
It's not being cocky if you can back it up!

Yup poke a hole in one. Just watch where it goes. They don't always drop right there.

lol not sure I'll be able to hit it  just wanted to make sure the equipment I have is sufficient. I have a friend who bow hunts for turkeys and he tunes his bow way down and uses very different looking heads. I assumed the broadheads would do the job thanks for the answers. Gonna see what happens tomorrow am

If you're a real good shot and can hit them through the base of the wing bone on the side or through the neck or spine from the front or back they shouldn't go anywhere. If you hit one anywhere else try to watch where it goes, I'd imagine they're not to easy to track. Your equipment is fine for the job. FYI I, think I missed all three by getting the yardage wrong. Good luck, take pics.

You will be surprised how far they can fly after an arrow goes through them...

you guys are all right on with your responses. ive gotten 2 turkeys so far with my bow while deer hunting an they can take an arrow to the body pretty well lol both times they took off so i went in that direction and found little to no blood, i just happened to stuble upon them. the second one was dead next to a log but the first one was still alive and i had to chase it down thru the woods and do hand to hand with it, im glad noone was around to see that  ::) so i guess my advice is try to take out their wings or hit em in the spine an if you dont give them pleny of time to die!

shot a hen last yr took out the legs but still had the broadhead marks threw the breast, not sure how that happened.  i guess a 2 inch head does the job.   i didn't have to run to fast to catch up with her.  sorry if the pic is too graphic, i will take it down if anyone wants me to.

I really don't care how many turkeys you shoot but I thought it was illegal to hunt turkeys from a tree stand in NY.
