Check Your Feed Ramp
« on: Aug 19, 2004, 06:39:43 AM »
One of the first steps to accurizing a firearm is to take the machining marks out of the feed ramp. It's the first thing the bullet touches when chambering a round.

Todays machining processes are a lot different than they were in the 60's and before. Tooling on CNC machines is changed on a time schedule not on an as needed basis. If the tool cutting the feed ramp chips or is out of spec, the whole batch of receivers will bear the ridges left by it.

These ridges literally file the bottom of the bullet off on contact when chambering. This causes a well formed bullet to be out of round and has a drastic effect on flight...especially at long distance.

Magazine wells are another common problem . They are stamped steel and generally have a sharp edge that can stick up into the bottom of the feed ramp and really shave a bullet on chambering.

Both areas should be re-cut and polished to a mirror finish to aleviate this damage to your bullets.
