Title: Another Gobbler Down.
Post by: hesseltine32 on Apr 10, 2021, 02:13:16 PM
Headed south to Va as it opens earlier then Md and had a quick hunt this morning. Set up on a ridge and listened and heard a bird gobbling in the dark. Headed that way and noticed there were a few birds gobbling, set up roughly 100 yards from them in the tree.  Was misty and foggy so was easy to sneak in close.  Birds gobbled heavy on the roost then shut up once they flew down. Held tight for 30 mins and noticed they were moving down the ridge to our left when one shock gobbled at a crow. We made a move and set up ahead of them and made a few calls and they got fired up gobbling hard and had 2 gobblers come in.  Little mix up on what bird we were each going to shoot so I ended up having to take a running shot on mine but all worked out.  Spent a few hours after scouting and looking for morels. No morels but did see two gobblers in a field on the property next door and found a shed.

Thanks everybody. Went out Sunday and had some luck as well. Rained all night and quit just before daylight and the birds were really fired up this morning gobbled non stop til about 9 when my buddy shot one. Took a while to move in on them and then wait them out as they were out in a private field, but after moving a few times we were able to pull one in.

Good luck. Planning to come up memorial weekend again to hunt. Like the latter part of the season in the Adks. Birds tend to be pretty fired up if the weather is good.

They def get lonely and chatty here the last week and the best part, everyone quit or tagged out. Though the weight is down a lot of old birds show that week

Took a ride down to va again this morning. Was a quick hunt. Walking in I heard a bird gobble in the far corner of the property. I made my way over while this bird kept gobbling and set up pretty close to him. Made two calls to him on the roost and he pitched down 50 yards in front of me and strutted into 30 when I shot him.

Heavy bird ended up have 3 beards. Need to get a set of scales.
