Well time, hard work and patience paid off. Knew there was a big buck around just couldnt figure him out. Passed on several smaller deer, hoping to get a crack at him. Was down to last 3 days, but could only hunt 2 of them. Thursday night i have a big doe come in just before dark. A 2nd larger deer is skirting the perimeter but its to dark and snowing to hard to get a good look let alone a good shot. First thing friday morning back in the stand . Its warmed up considerably but wind is perfect First light a spiker wanders through, then a big doe..buck should be next . At 9am someone started up a power saw half km from me cutting firewood on the woodlot I hunt. By 10 am I fed up listening to it and decide to go for a walk and still hunt. Just as i stand up I catch movement to my right. Here comes a buck strolling by right in the trail i came in on. I wait for him to make the clearing but he starts heading away from me, so i buck grunt. He stops up then turns back to me at a trot, and comes across the clearing in the trail to quick for a shot. Now he is about to make me as he cut through heavy brush and is yards from being downwind. I see one tiny opening through the brush and just before he gets to it i give him a hey and he stops up. Soon as he stops i squeezed one through. He takes 3 steps forwrd then turns and trots away back way he came and out of sight. Dont see or hear him go down so i wait a bit. I go to where he was standing and no blood or hair. Immediatly feel sick thinking i missed . I walk down the trail he took off across and fibd a few drops of blood. I follow it for a few doz yards snd it starts getting thicker. Buck jumped a brook and started heading up a hill at which point blood trail gets real thick. Get to top and there he is. One of my best bucks to date. 17 3/4 inch inside spread, dressed out just shy of 200lbs. Taken with my ol faithful marlin 336 30-30 150 grain powerpoints.
