Meaning shell and gun wise. Going on my first goose hunt the beginning of Sept. I own two 12 gauge guns. One is my turkey gun with a full choke and the other doesn't have a choke. Also what size shell and shot do you use?
-
I do alot of goose hunting if deer is not in season I use a 12 ga. 28" barrel Benelli Nova. For shells I wont shoot anything but 3 1/2's I like BB for shot size for an all around all season I am a big fan of the stopping power in Black cloud Federal.
Technically I believe a 3 in. shell will shoot a little further bc the 3 1/2 has the same amount of powder just less shot so it doesnt hafta use as much energy to push it but thats why I have a 28 in. barrel to get that little extra bc I like my extra shot in the pattern. I do the best in my gun with a mod. choke but the guns will vary. I will throw a full late season for the long shots but miss a lot ::).

Doesn't have a choke? There isn't anything stamped on the barrel? Imp, Cyc, Mod? I've always used BB or BBB steal shot out of a modified choke.
-
I've been using BBB's out of my 10ga, but I can't hit squat. The few I do connect with fall like rocks though.
-
According the experts you're not supposed to use a full choke with steel shot - I've never fully understood the rationale, but then again I've never understood how lighting a pilot light would make my old camp refrigerator cold either.....
As for gun/shot - Just like Aquaassassin, I use 3 1/2" steel BB's for both geese and 2nd season ducks.
-
Yea all my fulls say not to with steel but I do it anyway and have with the same guns for the last 10 yrs. or so with not a single issue.
I did however have an idiot of a friend shoot steel out of an x-full and that choke is now permanently stuck in that gun ;D.

To be honest I've used my full choke on several occasions with steel shot as well.

Nothing stamped on the barrel, other what shells size to use. It does have a 28 inch barrel as AA said he like to use. The gun is a Remington Sportsman Magnum Pump.
-
If I had to guess I would say it was a straight up Modified then.
-
I agree, and that's the gun I'd take. You may need a plug for the tube, I'm assuming you can only hold 3 shells in MD too.
-
3" Magnum BBB's!!!! And wait till you can see the Whites of their Eyes.....then it is time to "Brake some Bones"!!! ;D
-
I hit a crow at close range with BBB's out of my 10ga. Not sure where it went, it just vaporized in a cloud of feathers. If you get any geese, they make great jerky Drob, just slice the breast on a bias, brine over night and dehydrate. I think they're better than venison for jerky.

I shoot 3 1/2" fedreal premium 2 shot in september season. Been using black cloud but this year im going to try the winchester blind side. Later in december n jan I shoot BB 3" if im in a feeding feild. When hunting a traffic area I go to 3 1/2" shells. Very rarely, I mean very rarely do I switch chokes usually just keep the mod in. oh, this is all with the rem 887 28" barrel.
-
I have been using 3 inch #2's Black Cloud out of my 12 Gauge Benelli Vinci. When I take the Remington 10 Gauge, I will use 3 1/2 inch BBs , what ever I can get my hands. I always shoot Modified Choke
-
Claymore or 12 gauge and # 2's! ::)
-
You will need a plug- that's federal law. Drobs - tube can only hold two. Also, be careful that plug is sized for 2 3/4, and not just 3 or 3.5.

Not to call you out but the nova shoots up to 3s, the super nova shoots the 3 1/2s. I have both guns

Thanks for all your input everyone. Looks like I'll be using the Remington with 3 inch #2's.

I dont think it is Federal Law down here. I would post the link if my computer was working. Last year down here was the first year you could pull your plug out down here. You can only do it during the early goose season though.
-
That's because the early season is for resident geese. Migratory (regular) season has to be federal regulations.
-
I was thinking that may be the reason but wasn't sure. This is all new to me. ;)

3" in #2 out of an 1100- 30" barrel. Full choke. There are about 40 out the back window teasing me right now. 3 weeks from now we'll see who's laughing. ::)

You are 100 percent mistaken my friend I have a Benelli Nova, not super nova and it shoots 3 1/2's. I got it in 2003. Maybe you are thinking of Vinci and Super Vinci? Tried to sharpen the image but you can still see it says 12 ga. 3 1/2 right at the beginning.

you must have a really old one or something?
-
Here is a pic of the gun I was talking about. Should I put some camo tape on it?
