30-06 bullet weights
« on: Nov 10, 2005, 10:41:34 AM »
What weight bullet do you use for deer in your 30-06 and why?

Right now I'm using a 165gr. in  Federal Premiums because I thought it was a good all around bullet.

i dont hunt with a 30-06 but my dad does. we found 2 differnt loads for his rifle that work pretty good, one is a 180 gr. hornday interlock with I.M.R 3031 powder and winchester primers and winchester casings  the other is the same bullet but with primer and casings but with IMR 4895 powder, he prefers the 4895 because it has less recoil.

I hunt with a Remington Pointed soft point or regular soft point in 180 grain. I feel the 180 grain gives me a little better knock down power. I have shot the 150 grain and would definitely go to that weight if I were to be hunting open fields where a long brush free shot was more of a possibility. Still plenty of punch with probably a little better trajectory downrange.

I hunt mixed woods where a 100yd shot would be a long one.  I've only shot one deer with this rifle and it was 13yds away, so not a good test of what the rifle can do, but it didn't move when I shot it.

I use 165 gr. Sierra Game Kings with IMR 4350.  It shoots and kills very well.  I chose the game kings because they have a reputation for accuracy and good expansion.  I chose the 165 gr because I've been told that most 30.06 barrels are rifled for the 165 gr. bullets and thus should shoot better with them.
If it can't get done outdoors, it isn't going to get done!

I use 150 grain remington corelokt pointed softpoints. 150 grains in the '06 is more than enough wieght for deer at any range you can shoot them. i wouldnt go heavier unless i was hunting in thick brush with close shots (and i would use a round nose bullet) or on bigger animals such as elk.

I use 180 grain remington corelokt round nose soft point, it is a great bullet for
the woods and brush with a lot of knockdown power.

Hi guys: I found that 165gr. Hornady SpirePoint BoatTails and Speer HotCore/with 4350 Hogdon/  or 414 is Perrrrrrrrrrrfect! for Deer. also some of the factory loads from Federal or Winchester are hard to beat, shot a lot of deer with a 180gr. Winchester Silvertip and never went more then 20ft.I have tested many hand loads and bullets my personal favorites are 180gr.Nosler Partion,180gr. SilverTip,165gr.Hornady165gr.Speers,150 Nosler BallisticTip.

The .06 was originally designed to shoot the 150 grain PSP bullets, if that tells you anything? But each individual rifle is different, in it's individual characteristics. You'll just get "general optimum performance" from the 150 grain, is all. If you check the history of each caliber, you'll find what each one was designed to shoot. They did lots of tests before making their reccomendations, in each case. Most ballistics charts are also geared to the specific bullet that was designed for that particular caliber, as well, so the info on those charts is for the "standard factory load", which in the case of the 06 is the 150 grain PSP.  -Jim

That's the right bullet in my opinion.
I use 162gr. Hornady SST (Super Shock Tip), this bullet  is a boat tail with a polymer tip, with 4831 Hodge in my 7mm Rem. Mag.
Experimented with alot of bullets and loads, this mix can reach out there, with excellent hitting power when you need it! ;)
I find the SST more accurate than the PSP Boat Tail, that I used to use all the time.

With my Rem.700 , Ive shot core loc's 150gr. for over thirty yr's. most buck's were killed with one shot. But every rifle shoots diff. so find one that shoots the tightest group with your rifle. We even shot our moose with the some load.
