My first buck (strange horns)
« on: Aug 19, 2004, 02:54:22 PM »
This was my first buck I ever killed. It will be 2 years ago this november.

I killed him with one shot with a .243 from 30 yards away. I watched him for over 30 minutes as he was crossing a field. (it looks dark because it was dark when we found him, shot him 10 min. after sunset)

He had the strangest horns I've ever seen. The reason they were so strange is that they were symmetrically corkscrewed on both sides. Maybe you guys will know why.

i would say that it would probably be caused by an injury that the buck has due to fighting and that would cause the strange antlers

Spicoli, I'm going to have to disagree with you. I'm guessing that, yes, there was was an injury to the pedicles, but I'll bet that it was before the deer had shed his velvet,  while the antler was still forming. Or, there could be an imbalance in the levels of testosterone the buck was producing, due to a testicular injury of some sort.

Sorry i should have specified better, i ment in previous years not that year, injury to an animal in previous years will cause abnormalities in antler growth through the rest of it's life.
