Cool, we have a lot of luck on pastry early in the season, then later on high protein bait works better.

I'm not sure what the minnesota regs are, but in Wisconsin, we got a heck of a deal on taco shells, the bears seemed to really like them later in the season, we also had some chocolate, and cereal, if you can get dried fruit too, that's a good choice.

a buddy of mine works at a place in the cities that makes chips and we use them for deer and had notices the bear have been hitting it as well.
my grand father told me about dog food with grape jelly on it.

You will have to check your regs to see what is legal to use, but just about anything from stinky to sweet will work. I use meat sraps from a bucher shop, popcorn, donuts, fruit, dog food, rolled oats with mallasas, their not to picky. I take a black 5 gallon bucket and put meat sraps in it and set it out in the sun for about a week and let it get good and ripe then hang it from a tree for an attractent. works good if ya can stand the smell. I have gagged a few times while hanging it though ;D

Any tips on Hunting without bait?  Going out Black Bear hunting for the 1st time myself. It's not legal to bait here in NY and I'm wondering how to go about it. I'm thinking about Still Hunting / Stalking rather than just sitting on stand. Any advice much appreciated...

best bet is to find a natural food source only thing is bears are wanderers. That bear we saw last month might not go down that trail again for a long time
