Title: 2012 Season
Post by: appleye on Aug 11, 2012, 08:19:54 AM
Anyone getting ready for the season? I've been doing a little scouting but the fishing has been so good I can't stop! LOL I have a Antelope tag in the Red Desert and managed a couple days scouting/fishing on Seminoe. Spotted a real good antelope I'm hoping to go look for in two weeks. I've seen a couple nice mule deer in places I have access to. Now if I can get long bow distace away. I've been shooting for months after the no bow hunting last fall after shoulder surgery. I'm ready to do a little bow hunting. The dry conditions should assist in the antelope hunting.

Anyway let the games begin!

I made the draw of a lifetime this year. I got an area 1 type 1 moose tag.  I have been up several times scouting.  A week ago I spotted three very big bulls in my area.  Rifle season starts Oct 1.

Appleye, good luck on the Red Desert goat.  I have hunted area 64 and a few other nearby areas in the past.  Wonderful country for a quality hunt.  Lots of animals, lots of room and few people.

Appleye, glad you are back in action after a year off from surgery! Couldn't imagine not being able to archery hunt a season. I've been shooting my bow all summer and am ready to chase an antelope this week! I didn't draw any exciting tags (leftovers and generals), but I'm excited for the season anyway. Took a quick 20 mile loop through the mountains over the weekend and managed to see a few animals. No antlers, but they were there in the dark timber somewhere.

Good luck this season!

Well got the first blood of the year, my wife got her elk this weekend, will post pictures when I get them.  We got 4 elk out of 7 people this weekend, but we should have had more just could not connect of a couple other shooting opportunities, but did have 2 cows and a spike run 15 yards by the wife and I in the trees.  Could not get a shot off but was fun being in the middle of the elk.  Going back out this next weekend to see if I can fill my tag, last weekend before the season ends.  Hope everyone else had a great weekend what ever you did.

Well went out this weekend again and got my cow elk, had fun running around the hills. Heard bulls bugling and even had one coming in to my cow calls, but my buddy shot at one of the cows and he turned away and walked the other direction.  Was hoping that he would come in so my girls could experience having a big bull come in and parade himself.  Had the whole family out and seen a lot of elk, so far we filled 6 of 9 tags and everyone has had the opportunity to get one.  Would post some pictures of the two we got but photobucket is freezing on me, so when I get it worked out will post some pictures.

yeah they are rifle hunts, the Game and fish put this season on to take some of the pressure off during the October rifle hunt.  Is the way the biologist explained it to me when I ran into him on the mountain.  Fun hunt, but hot and had to cut them up fast.  My brother had a freezer that we ran with a little generator and when we got one we cut it in chunks and threw it in the freezer.  So we did not lose any meat which is a big worry this early in the year, now for some elk burgers.

Actually the bulls were not bothered much, they were starting to bugle and were even coming into the calls, Tomarrow is the last day the rifle hunters will be out there, and if this last weekend was any indication there is probably not to many out there, we only saw about 12 hunters total outside of our party that were out this last weekend.  But we did find a place where there were 8 bulls hanging out, all of them had the velvet scrapped off and where talking amongst themselves.  Good luck to everyone, dove season opens Saturday cannot wait to go and try my luck again shooting at them.

We were moose scouting again.  My brother in law has no idea how to use a digital camera.  Not really he just tried to zoom in too much with the digital zoom.  These three bulls were in  my area.  I think any one of them will do.  But I like the front one.

Well, between scouting and the first few days of season I've probably looked over close to 100 bucks. Found 2 that just make your eyes bug out, and more 4 points than I can even count. I had my first attempt at one of the big ones foiled by some more bucks with him I didn't see bedded. Decided to give him a rest for a few days, went after the other big one. Found 13 different bucks in about a mile square area, including this one, but not the big guy. I just thought he looked cool with how tall he is.

Stopped on the way home from work and found one of the big boys bedded. First time I've been able to get a good long look at him. Has a kicker on one side I figured was about 6 in. long, really big tops, and wide. I really need to figure out pictures through a spotting scope... any suggestions?

I have an adapter that my iPhone fits in and it has different size rings that screw onto the adapter and then fit onto the ocular lens of the scope. It works great. Some people just hold a digital camera up to the eyepiece and shoot but it's hard to hold steady.

What peddler said.  There are adapters out there- might be worth investing one, or you can also find some DIY plans on the web.  I think Turkey Country or a similar magazine had plans for one in the last year or two.

Well went and finally hunted for a sandhill crane.  Had the tag two other times but was too busy hunting antelope, deer, or elk.  But this year not having an antelope tag, and not shooting my bow this year, decided to put more effort into the sandhill crane hunt.  Snuck up on a couple, since i do not know how to call them in like geese or ducks, and missed a couple of opportunities, we were out on one of my buddies properties looking for some antelope for my dad, and not finding any we decided to make sure the gun for my buddy to take elk hunting in a couple of weeks was on, and that it would work for him.  We got that sited in and were letting the kids shoot the 22's when we look over and about 75 cranes are flying in.  Hide behind the trucks and waited for the first flock to fly over and i jump up and oh man forgot the safety, got it off and did not get my cheek on the gun before I pulled the  trigger and bam hit my nose with my thumb.  Heard the pellets hit one, but watched them fly over a mile away and not one fell.  Well the next flock came over and i jumped up and knocked one down.  Then took the wife out the next night and she missed a few, might be going back out and seeing if we can get the last two tags filled before elk season starts.  Enjoy the picture, big bird, not a lot of meat.  But tasted good.

Congrats Fish/Hunt. Sounds like the boat I'm in. I've got a tag too, but been so busy that when I do get out it's been with the bow for four legged critters. Probably won't get a chance to fill my crane tag, but fun seeing someone who did. Nice work!

we also have blue herons around here, and lots of cranes, the difference in flight is herons hold their necks in a s-shape, while cranes keep their head and neck straight, and usually make a lot of noise while in flight.  But yeah we have a bunch of cranes throughout the year, I think a crane can eat like a bushel to a bushel and a half of grain a day, very destructive to farmers fields.  But they only give out 80 tags in the area that we are hunting with a 3 week season.  Kind of wish the season was around the 1st of November so I could pheasant hunt and crane hunt at the same time. Usually see more around that time of year, but have to hunt them when I can.

What we did was take some Italian sausage that we had made out of an atelope we got a couple years ago, cooked it, made some stuffing with onion and carrots, and cut the sandhill up into bite sizes, and mixed this all together, the sandhill was still not cooked, put in the oven for the 30 minutes to cook the sandhill and stuffing and ate.  To me it tasted more like a dove, than duck or geese.  I think duck and geese have more grease to them.  But this way of fixing the sandhill will be repeated if my wife gets hers.

Well last week Rifle season opened above dubois for elk and deer.  I was not able to go for the opener but my dad was up on the mountain.  On day two I got a text that my dad had gotten his elk, I was not able to leave until that night to try and get up there to help him get it out, but my hunting partner was able to get up there around noon and helped him drag it out.  He got a nice 2 X 3 and I will post pictures when I get them.  So then I am able to get to the mountain and we try and evening hunt with not much going on, but there are lots of tracks showing that the elk are there.  So the first morning I am up and ready to go, and we head back to the spot and walk into a couple of cows and then the movement behind shows a nice 6 X 6.  He stops in a shooting lane for me, but I want my partner to get a shot since he has only killed an antelope 20 years ago and is getting back into hunting, but the bull walks across the meadow and my hunting partner is not willing to shoot, so that one gets away.  We walk around looking at lots of sign and all of the sudden a bugle behind us.  I let out a bugle and start cow calling, and get into position, when my hunting partner sees orange coming down the hill, I called in two other hunters.  So we go in a different direction and are slowly working through the woods.  When all of the sudden I hear another bugle just down below us.  I start cow calling and the bull does not bugle back.  So I think it might be more hunters we slowly work down through the trees.  All of the sudden I look to the right and 50 yards away a bull is feeding down the trail.  He stops in three shooting lanes for me, but he is walking right to my hunting partner, he has a frontal shot but does not really know where to shoot, My partner tries to move while the bull is feeding to get a better angle and the bull spots his movement and looks right at him.  At this point it is the only spot that i cannot get a shot.  So I know which way he is going to spin and run, so i put the cross hairs there and wait.  The bull spins and I see him in the scope and pull the trigger, pulled up to meet him while he was coming down and shot right over his shoulder.  The bull starts heading down and I reload and shoot as he is quartering hard away, I graze his hind quarter and hit him, he turns the corner as I reload and shoot again, this time I hit him in the shoulder, Both shots are fatal, but I shoot until they are down or out of sight.  Pick up brass and start to look for blood.  Go to the corner where I last shot and there he is laying looking back down the trail, pull up and hit him again.  Now he is laying there, but still breathing a little, I hate to see anything suffer, so get my hunting partners 9mm and shoot him behind the ear, this does not work, so I shot again, then walk up and shoot him in the back of the head.  Done. Now the work begins.  Open him up but leave the cape intact, and try to see how we are going to get him out.  Then see that i am 50 yards from a logging road. and go and get the 4 wheeler.  I have been really lucky this year to be able to pull both elk out this year with the 4 wheeler and not have to pack them out.

So then we hunt the evening with no luck, and my uncle and cousin show up.  So we make a game plan to head to a little different spot that we have seen elk heading to.  On the drive up my uncle and cousin almost get ran over by two spikes in the ranger, but it was still before legal light.  So we head on up to our spot.  People all over, talked to one guy that said the elk where bugling all over the night before and he killed a 6 X 7 and was getting ready to pack him out, and that a spike and 5 X 5 where also taken the night before.  We head in and get to the top of the ridge and see flashes through the trees.  Slowly sneak through the trees and hear something off to the left and out steps a cow.  My hunting partner can see two cows and a calf, but no bull.  He moves slightly to see around the tree, busted they turn and run up the hill and I think I hear antlers tick off of a couple of trees, but cannot tell.  That was all the excitement for the morning, just more tracks later on in the morning.  So we head to a little different spot and go in for an evening hunt.  Run into a cow moose, and hear the mating behaviors of several others in the area.  My uncle and cousin seen 5 moose with one big bull and one smaller bull, and the rest cows and calves.  Nothing but a bunch of tracks so we head back down towards the truck.  Pop out and here are 5 cows and calves standing on the ridge towards the truck.  Then the bull steps out from behind the trees and my hunting partner gets ready.  I whistle and the bull stops and looks over his shoulder, Pull the trigger and oh no the gun is on safety, take the safety off and get down and shoot, right over his back.  two more shots with nothing.  Run down the ridge trying to cut them off.  I go over and check for blood and hear a shot down the ridge, yes he found them again, start to go down ridge.  Look out in meadow and see a couple of hunters.  Look it is my uncle and cousin.  Hear another shot and look, they got a bull down.  Cousin gets first animal ever.

Then hunt a couple more days with only seeing cows and a glimpse of a bull through the trees as he walks away.  But did go over to the lake, brooks lake, and fished with the kids and got a couple of fish there, just windy and could not see all the bites.  But all and all a great 5 1/2 days of hunting and spending time with the family and Friends.

Then on the way home seen this guy standing on the highway, a treat for everyone to see.

Got a few hours trying to fill a couple goat tags I've had since archery season. I nice doe came by my fence post and I dropped her. I had seen a coupe goats in the area and assumed they all ran off at the shot.  When I gained a little elevation the valley was filled with antelope. Of course the mass Exodus began. I laid down on the top of the hill I was one and could see a couple goat close. One had horns and since I wasn't to picky as I was making sausage from them I decided and would taken anything with elk season starting next week. Most of the antelope had cleared the area and the horns came sneaking around the hill until our eyes locked on each over. All I could see was the head. Distance was 125 yards and I had just checked the scope and decided what the heck. I aimed just low of the right eye fired. Heard the load whop and no antelope. Walked up and hit right where I was aiming. Already for some sausage now.

Photo is a little graphic. If the mods think it's not appropriate I understand.

Well it looks like my season is over, General deer closed the 22nd for the area that I hunt but it was a good season.  My wife and brother in law got their deer the week that we hunted deer, but I only seen one legal deer the 6 days we hunted and the wife shot him on the last day of the season. As seen in the photo.

Would go into details about the deer hunting but so much happened that it is hard to describe, we had a great time though, my wife and dad ran into a monster deer but missed, got to spend time in the great outdoors with my daughters, and found a new application for my pack frame, which a picture is the best way to show.

Well good hunting to all that still have tags to fill, I think since I am done until pheasant hunting starts the first Saturday of November, I might go and do some fishing.

Then pheasant season opened and we had seen a lot of pheasants out and about, but I guess everyone else had as well, we finally got one, and got a photo as we stopped to eat some lunch and decide where we were going since everyone was out in all of our spots.

And then we even seen some nice bucks and a couple of whitetailed does laying in a corn Field as we drove by, enjoy the pictures and hopefully more to come, going duck hunting with the wife and uncle this weekend.

Went out for one of the final times to hunt pheasants and finally got one to stay put after I hit it.  Seen a lot of hen pheasants and a few roosters, but it was rally nice to see so many birds around this part of the state again.  Just hopefully there are more roosters around.

yes we do, just wish it was not so expensive to get out any more, hate paying over 4 dollars a gallon for diesel, and over 3.50 a gallon for gas.  But I guess everything will go up after time, just wish the paychecks reflected the increase as well.  But love the country I live in and trying to educate my children in the wonders that lay around them, now for some icefishing.
