These photo's were taken in the Red Desert while deer hunting. Not much was seen in the deer department but the elk sighings made up for it. I found out later that the season had just opened for elk.

We had an eventfull evening last night. I was up at my buddy's house having a few beers and he suggested we go look for deer. Sounded like a good idea driving the canal roads getting the truck muddy. We drove the corn field first and didn't see anything. Just as we were turning around he looked out the window into the hay field and seen horns. He started going ballistic saying "GET YOUR GUN OUT, GET YOUR GUN OUT'!! So I got out and laid the 300 over the hood and got them in the reticle. I told him to range it and he said "83 yards" and I said to him "do it again"!! Next time he said "37 yards". At that point it was snowing hard enough that the rangefinder wouldn't range correctly. I figured 300 yards so I held 2 mills and pulled the trigger. Down he went. The other bucks that were with him did their usual standing around wondering what was going on so we went back to the house to get my wife and she was in the shower. Needless to say she came out of there in record time when I told her that her buck was in the hayfield by the house. She grabbed her rifle and we stalked them until we got to the end of the feedlot. She was out of breath and shaking pretty bad. After a couple of minutes getting her relaxed she pulled the trigger and down he went. A perfect 200 yard shot and her very first deer in her life. I'm so proud of her. Hers is a 5x5 and mine is a 7x8 with a ton of mass.  I'll get some better pics later but here's a few for now.
P.S.  He's not the big buck I've been seeing on the trailcam.  :-\

Congrats on the nice bull elk, and great deer.  I went up and hunted for elk and deer around dubois seen lots of deer in the snow only a couple shooter bucks, but could not get the shots, either does in the way, or trees in the way.  But did end up with a nice bull, seen the bigger one run this guy off, but we could only find this one and my buddy got it done, well we actually both hit him, I just let him tag it on his birthday and he has only killed three elk, one cow and one other bull, just this one is the biggest for him to date, what a great birthday present.

Nice pictures Dain, I had one of those at ten feet but no camera on me at the time, could have thumped him in the head with the rifle barrel, had elk come down past me, started cow calling heard crunching thought it was the bull and at 10 yards seen bear coming at me, and he stepped out in the little clearing I was standing in down in the dark timber, started sniffing around looking for the elk, I said hi and he ran the other way.  Was a very exiting moment there.

I carry the Magnum for them, but only when they act aggressively towards me, there are some areas around here that if you are hunting in them it is required that we carry bear spray.  I love to see all the wildlife out there, it is always a cool feeling to be so close to the animals, even if they are a little more dangerous than other.  Hope to have more pictures in the next few days, went out deer hunting last night after work, seen some little guys and thought I had a good picture with the camera on the spotting scope, but none of the pictures turned out.  Was a great night out with the family.

Do you have a general tag or a 157 tag Nate?
Title: Re: Hunting Photos
Post by: fish/hunt4ever on Oct 16, 2013, 08:54:26 AM
I just have a general tag, the only thing I drew was a sandhill crane tag and did not even hunt for that one with my wife not being able to go out and hunt for her sandhill crane.  The little buck i seen shot was just barely legal with the 3 points or better, i do not think the guys from county 4 even looked to see they just shot it.  It was about an 18 inch wide 20 inch tall 2X3.  The third point was just there, but the kid looked like he was a youth hunter so then it really did not matter, I did not stick around to see thought I might get roped into dragging it since it ran into a pretty bad draw before he got him down.  It was nice being out and seeing as many does and fawns and we did in one evening hunt.  Plus three legal bucks to boot.

I bought that double used in 1961 for $50.  It is a 20 ga Stevens.  I have tried a number of guns but always seem to go back to this one.  I was in high school in Minot, ND.  At the time I really wanted an O/U (preferably a Beretta Silver Snipe) like everyone else.  But they were a bit out of my price range.  Now I have a Beretta and it sits in the case most of the time.

Well went up right after the snow storm and thought some elk might be pushed down into the area that was still open to take cow/calf elk with a general tag.  I thought today was the day and we left and arrived later than I wanted to, but the roads were still pretty icy so driving safely was about 45 mph.  We arrived and walked in, meet another guy coming out, he worked for the game and fish at the fish hatchery and got some good information out of him about Morton lake, they released a bunch of brookies into the lake, but back to hunting. We walked in 2.2 miles and seen lots of tracks but looked like the elk were moving during the snow.  Bummer we were too late.  Glassed a lot of country from our perch atop of the world and seen elk across the boundary 2 miles away.  So started headed back to the rhino and head to another spot to walk into and look towards evening.  While we were walking out a horse rider went out ahead of us and we got back to where the trail dropped back down to the trail head and looked across the canyon and seen movement, well must be deer this late in the day.  Glassed it anyways and elk were walking out about 700 yards away.  my hunting partner said that is a mighty far shot, I agreed so we went to see if we could get closer, the elk jumped the forest boundary fence and we thought what the heck lets try, and started shooting, turned the elk back, the first shots were 4 feet low, then 4 feet high, then low then high, but turned them back towards the truck, three broke towards the truck and came out closer only 550 yards, first shot low, i shot 6 inches over the back, next shot right behind them, my next shot was 4 inches over the back, next shot could not tell. the elk stopped looking around, only 150 yards above the rhino.  Ran down and cut them off as they stepped across the road, elk down and close to the road, no need for the horses on stand by, back pickup up and load elk in whole, then went and seen some nice deer and some nice sheep then went home, Oh and the elk down at 11:45 am, my hunting partners wife said I was too optimistic about having elk on the ground and home by noon, well I guess it pays off to have a positive thinking while going hunting.  Here are a couple of pictures before we loaded them up.
