We were hunting area 37, just out side of Thermopolis, and there are some public lands mixed in with the private. We usually hunt the last week of the season because the bucks are starting to think about the rut and some of the bigger bucks finally show up from where ever they have been hiding. Melody and I were walking and glassing, we had sat down and glassed the big canyon behind us in the pic. When we got up to move four bucks and three does got up from the sage brush 150 yards in front of us and took off. (Didnt spend enough time glassing I guess, they really hide well when laying down in 3 foot high sage.) The bucks ran about 3/4 of a mile down the canyon and went back to feeding, still in sight of Mel and I. So I Left Melody sitting on the side of the hill with the binoculars and took off after them. Mel said while she was watching this buck he was thrashing the heck out of a tree (with visions of does dancing in his head). I was able to get below a rock out cropping and sneak within about 300 yards and peak up over the rocks, he never knew I was there and gave me all the time I needed. He only made it about 50 yards after the shot. He taped 30 inches to the outside.
