Title: what are you shooting?
Post by: redeyes on Sep 01, 2004, 08:44:43 AM
I've used to use my Pse Nova stage 3, but then it got to small for me so now, I just ordered a Reflex grizzly package.

  What is everyone else shooting?

;D I shoot a 20 some year old Pearson Spoiler.  It was retired as my bowfishing set up but several years ago my Proline let me down mid-season with limb failure.  I brought the old Pearson out of retirement and 2 days later took my best buck ever at the time with it.  I have since taken a better buck and numerous doe and continue to use it because of its reliable accuracy and durability.  It doesn't keep up with today's bows on the speed scene but serves my needs just fine.

My set up:

Draw weight     80#
Draw length      31"
Arrow                Carbon, Beman Hunter (old style, not ICS)
Arrow weight    400 gr including tip
Broadhead        100 gr Rocket Hammerhead
Speed                268 FPS
Release             Scott Caliper

Matthews Z-Max.  70# draw weight, 80% let off, Carbon Express graphite arrows, Spitfire 100's, Trophy Ridge Matrix (awesome! 8)) sight, Whisker Biscuit.

Love this set up!  Fast, light, accurate, easy to tune...  It's almost cheating compared to my old bow that I've since donated (Martin Lynx).

I have been shooting a Bear whitetail legend for about 15 years,  it is not the fastest but it is very quiet.  My buddies give me a hard time about not getting something more modern but until I have a problem or the arrow fails to blow through the deer I am happy with what I have.  By the way I use thunderhead 125s and a flipper rest.

PA Bowhunter,

I about fell out of my chair;  I shoot the same bow in the lefthanded version.  Mine is loud as a son of a gun and has not shot a deer.  Some day I will find some time and land to get out again.  Do you have any idea of some progress on Sunday hunting?

Mike

Small world Mike!  I'm a lefty too!  Mine is quite quiet with rubber string silencers and a good vibration absorbing stabilizer.  Make sure you have no loose or worn parts.  I haven't heard anything new on Sun. hunting.  I hope they keep it the way it is, I like having the woods all to myself. ;D  Just kidding, I'm all for Sun. hunting and anything else that gets me out in the woods more.

I have a 10+ year old PSE F1 Maxis at 65# with 26 1/2" GT XT Hunter 5575 Carbons and 100 gr 3 blade Muzzys. I use an RS Glow Fiber optic sight and a wisker biscut. With this setup I am still getting close to 250 FPS and use only one pin for up to 40 yards.

Left eyed here too, I shoot a Mathews MQ1 I needed the speed and quietness, becuase deer were getting spooked with long shots with my old slow loud bow, I shot a nice do at 37 yards with it, two days after I baught it, I shoot Easton explorer carbons with three blade thunderhead 100 gr. broadheads.  This setup is awesome, and I couldn't imagine anything better, or it would be too easy.

Jennings Buckmaster G2, 67# draw weight, 28 inch draw length, Gold Tip Carbon arrows tipped with 100 grain Crimson Talons (100 gr. 3-blade Spitfires is my second choice). Trophy Ridge Matrix Sight and a Trophy Ridge Drop Zone drop away rest.

Fast, quiet and deadly. Its almost not fair. Just ask the Elk.

Killed my 6th bull this year with this set up. He was a 4x5 raghorn or satelite bull and the shot was 19 yards. Got a clean pass through double lung shot and the arrow buried in a tree about 5 yards behind the bull. Those Crimson Talons are wicked little broadheads

Hoyt magnatec intruder.  Beman ICShunter carbon arrows, 100gr thunderheads, two prong arrow rest (forget the name) and a cobra release.  Also, a 3 pin fiber optic sight, (although I only use two pins 20 and 30 yards) I think its a cobra too, but I'm not sure.  65# draw weight with a 29" draw.  Kinda quiet no limb savers or anything but I probably should have them installed.

Title: Re: what are you shooting?
Post by: archbishop on Apr 13, 2005, 09:31:30 AM
missing isnt the bows fault ive seen people shoot dead on with some pretty beat up bows and those few who have mastered the art of recurves and longbows get much respect from me unless it makes funny noises or breaks its your fault
Title: Re: what are you shooting?
Post by: spiker2 on Apr 13, 2005, 09:59:46 AM
you need to blame it on something, and everybody knows that when you miss it isn't your fault it is always the equipments fault. ;)

Ok, it did get better, I switched to the easton axis arrows, WAY BETTER than those explorers.  They have a small diameter, and have been doing much better with them.  It really does make a huge difference, going from 13 gr. to 9 gr. per arrow.  The penetration is awesome, they are worth a try.

I have a Browning Ultra Accelerator that I have used since 1994.  It is slow compared to the newer bows but I am comfortable and confident with it.  Every time I pick it up and take a practice shot the first arrow goes right where I aimed it (if the target is within 30 yards).  So I am going to keep using it until something breaks.  Good luck and safe hunting to all.

Browning Mirage XE  60 lbs
Carbon force arrows
Muzzy 100 gr
Bought the bow in 1993 but cant trade it in cause ive killed too many deer with it including 4 over 200 lbs. One weighing 247 lbs. I just cant give it up, the bows been too faithful. Besides it dont matter what bow u shoot if you hit them right theyre done.

After owning everything from a pearson fiberglass recurve, to a Hoyt,(my son is still shooting that) including golden eagle and proline and bear and pse. Yes allot of different bows. I now have an alpine frontier. Shoots fast flat and took a four point with it last fall. Real light, short axle length, smooth draw and quiet. Like it so far, it does have a little harder recoil, need tough rest and sight mounts.(broke a rest off at a 3-d shoot). But with carbon express arrows and rage expandables, it does a nice job.

Come on...where are you getting your info?
I seriously doubt that Mathews would make such a mistake. I have shot mine a few hundred times and have had nothing but great response from the Bow.
I did look at some Bowtech Bows and was extremely impressed. Maybe after they are around for a little longer, I might consider buying one. Apparently you like yours a lot and I have heard great things about them from the dealer I bought my Mathews from. They specialize in PSE, Mathews and Bowtech...I think it is a matter of personal preference!!!

It's definitely a matter of personal preference!  I'm still shooting a High Country Royal Hunter.  It's about 20 years old.  Still looks and shoots like it just came out of the box.  My middle son is a bow nut, so I'm thinking of turning down the draw weight and giving it to him.  That way I'll have to go out and buy a new one!

I couldn't agree more otis. I'm still shooting my Oneida Screaming Eagle. I love that bow, fast & accurate. A little bit of a pain to keep tuned but otherwise it's a rocket!

Gander Mountain Tec Hunter. For the price I paid, I couldn't have possibly got a better bow. The thing is lightning quick and fully equipped with Limb Savers. 29" draw @ 70 lbs. Great bow for the money, definitely recommend it.

I have a 2nd hand mathews Z-Max. Shoots great so I won't replace it until it delaminates or something. I still use a wisker bisket, because they are quiet and secure.
