It doesn't help that Governor Spaz appointed a bunch of people to key positions in the DEC that don't have a clue about hunting.  :P

and the sad part is they will have no problem figuring out new and interesting laws to take away more of our rights.

It's getting VERY tiresome to hear the complaints about the management of our deer herds in New York.  I am not currently supporting the new change in management for the DEC, however, they have had little time to make changes to the existing system...their actions will take effect in years to come. [Side note -- If you're going to blame them for this gross mis-managment of DMP's, then where's the credit for passing the rifle legislation in the Southern Tier?]

In the general area [and surrounding counties] that I live and hunt, we recorded lower then normal snowfall amounts for the 2006-07 winter season...and as expected, glassing fields at dusk demonstrates the effect of a mild (snowfall) winter with twins the norm and singles the rarity.  If you're still an archaic hunter who doesn't believe in shooting does...apply for your tags and "protect" a doe from being shot.

On whole, the DEC as an agency is underfunded and understaffed...so they rely on what little information they can glean from hunting success records, farmers, field research, etc.  If you don't agree with the approach they are taking...DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT!!  Take part in the bowhunting survey...if you don't bowhunt, then volunteer to field research and make yourself useful.  I don't work for nor receive compensation from the DEC and I used to be a BIG complainer when I didn't get what I wanted during hunting season...but a little common sense and actual participation (bowhunting survey) allowed me to realize the maintenance of the herd is not all about ME!!

Very well put Deer Reaver.  I couldn't have said it better!  I think that most people will find it very rewarding once they take the jump and start volunteering.

I agree DeerReaver, it is foolish of people to think that the DEC is limiting or adding permits without reason.  Their primary function is to protect our deer herds to ensure that future of the sport is there for our families to enjoy in the years to come.  Our society is a society of I and Me and expect to be catered to "right now" and seem to not be concerned with the future.  I hate the fact that I have not received DMP's tags the last couple of years, and I hunt in Allegany County and Onondaga County.  I have seen a definite decline in the deer population over the last 10 years.  Maybe with the light winters we have had in recent times will help as well as the restrictions on DMP's.  I would like to see an effort to have deer removed from city neighborhoods and relocated in the State forests.  I think this will help the deer population grow in areas where there has been a decline, reduce the number of car/deer accidents and give these animals a more condusive area to live, but as you said DeerReaver the DEC is so taxed and so understaffed that will never happen.  We as hunters need to step up, stop whining and take some initiative.  I will never complain about my license money as long as it goes towards preserving our N.Y. hunting .

If you didn't get a DMP last year, you have 1 preference point. They tell you how many you have when you go to buy your license.

I think DEC would be better run if all the money from license sales went back into it but like everything else in NY, the Legislators can't help but spend the money else where. :P

2 for 2 on my DMP's........1st is for Alleghany County where they are loaded with deer and second is for bow only area in Delmar. Both were listed as high chance of success. Lady at town hall told me someone had been turned down for the bow only area which is even listed as high chance for non resident's 2nd DMP.
