Savage 10ML-II comes through
« on: Nov 14, 2012, 08:55:56 AM »
My son was able to visit his Mom and me for the weekend. We got to hunt both days. We chose zone M for obvious reasons. Neither of us had/has an "M" tag. Saturday morning we went into the woods right at daybreak. We immediatly jumped 3 deer. Too dark to tell, but we assumed a doe and 2 skippers. We hunted the rest of the day unable to connect. We decided Saturday evening to get there earlier Sunday morning.  Just about the same thing happened.  We saw the flags of 2 deer but it again was way too dark to tell what they were. THIS time I stayed put and my son went in ahead and tried to get around the deer by using a trail. He accomplished what he wanted and turned the deer to me. At this time I didn realize both deer turned. I could hear the leaves rustling and then I saw a deer. I had already made up my mind that any deer was OK with me. The deer stepped into the opening, crosshair on the left front shoulder. BANG, deer hit hard. Ran about 75 yards and piled up. When I shot, a second deer broke out across the open and I noticed antlers. Nice rack, but not any larger than the one I had just killed. My son came out minutes behind the deer and asked where the deer was. I replied, "right there near you". He found it and yells, "nice buck". I honestly  thought it was a doe.

My muzzleloader is the Savage 10ML-II. I was shooting 47 grains of IMR 4227. A jacketed Hornady 250 grain hollow point XTP bullet and an MMP sabot with a Winchester 209 primer.

He'll be a good eater. 128 pounds. Forkhorn. My son recently lost his job and that's the main reason for killing this buck. I gave him the deer so I know he has SOME meat in the fezzzer. My wife and I are headed to Anticosti Island on Friday. Thanks everyone for taking the time to compliment an old man. :) :) :)

Good to hear from you. I absolutely would never have seen these deer if he hadn't been good enough to do what he did.  We were hunting for the wrong reason. He NEEDED the meat in his freezer. I told him we should go to the meat shop aand buy what he needed. Success with the hunt marked a fantastic memory.
