Finally Got One

Opening morning got off to a slow start, forgot to set the alarm and I woke up an hour late and rushed out the door to get to the hunting spot.  Cursing myself the whole ride for being late.  Hustled into the and finally got settled at about 0615.  I sat through some showers and at about 7 I caught movement about 50 yards at the top of a knoll in some small pine trees.  I was just pumped because I actually saw a deer and figured it would just keep walking away from me on it's current path.  Well low and behold it took a hard right and sauntered down into the opening my stand was overlooking munching acorns the whole time.  My heart was going a mile a minute and I was trying to keep myself composed, then I saw it was actually a buck and I got real shaky  :).  He stopped, and I swear he looked up in the tree right at me for a second.  I just stood still and he put his head back down and continued to eat acorns.  Well he stopped broad side at about 25 yards and I let one fly.  I heard the "thawack" and he looked stunned.  I expected him to bolt but he kind of trotted 10 yards walked did a couple circles, and I could see the blood spot on his side from the tree so I felt pretty good about the shot, he looked a little tipsy, and he continued walking another 15 yds to my right where he hung for a few and I lost sight of him.  Well I decided to wait, I didn't want to bump him and loose a blood trail with how wet it was and the trees still dripping, it was the longest 45 minutes of my life.  I finally got down out of the tree and he hadn't gone another 20 yards from where I last saw him.  Needless to say I was pumped. 



Certainly not the biggest buck ever, but it's my first deer and the fact I did it with a bow makes it a pretty satisfying feeling.  Not to mention the fact at that size, he's delicious eating :)  Looking forward to the rest of the season and with any luck sticking another one.

Congratulations, that's an awesome first deer. I remember that feeling with my first one like it was last week. Mine was much smaller though. I bet you're hooked now.

First deer is always a good thing, but taking it with a bow is an accomplishment to be proud of!

Congrats! I'm a big fan of second shifters! It always seems to pay off. The last guy out of bed and to leave the camp always seem to stumble upon a buck just standing there ;D Congrats again on your first harvest and to have it with a bow is impressive.
