Oneida Hatchery Trip
« on: Apr 10, 2011, 05:35:53 PM »
Heather and I made the drive to Oneida today, I always wanted to watch the walleye egg stripping. Here's some pictures and videos.

Inside the Hatchery

Walleye tanks

Here's the sturgeon tank, Heathers favorite

Some paddle fish from the sturgeon tank, some were dark and some looked like albinos.

Here's a few videos of the egg stripping. They have males and females in tanks next to each other so they are getting the ratio they want of males to females. The last one is the bins of fertilized eggs.

Very cool.  I keep telling myself to get down to Conesus Lake where the walleyes and pike stack up at a low head dam before the marshes, but I never get there.

One of the sturgeon from Oneida is out here at the Caledonia hatchery - I live about 20 minutes from there.  It's the oldest hatchery in the US.
I'm bound to stay where you sleep all day, Where they hung the jerk that invented work, in the Big Rock Candy Mountains.

You obviously didn't watch the video where they were milkin the spunk and eggs...if that made you hungry then you haven't changed since the bullhead guts... ;D ;)

I was thinking about grabbing an arm full of 'eyes and running, or putting a bucket where they were throwing the fish when done  ;D.

LOL. I caught a Walleye once on Deep Creek lake. It was only about 16 inches, caught it on a Cotton Cordell crankbait perch color. I returned mine to be caught another day but I hear they a good to eat.
