Got one down
« on: Nov 10, 2015, 11:38:20 AM »
I took the next two days off from work and will hunt 4 different towns trying to fill my first 2015 tag. Good luck to everyone that will be out in the woods be safe and make sure of your target and know what is beyond it.

Good luck. Deer seem to be moving around a little more and earlier over the last few days. Cameras show bucks hanging around with does.

Think I'm going to go for that all day sit. Sounds like some wet weather coming in, hopefully it's a light rain and puts the deer on their feet.

So discouraged with the way my season has gone drawing back on a giant buck at 7 yards and not having a clean shot so i backed down, to having 5 deer come to 20 yards with no shot, to missing a chip shot with the bow all in my first 6 sits of the season. The next 16 sits were deerless. I put in a lot of time this year especially for someone with a young son at home (my wife has been a saint.) Took opening day of shotgun off and hunted the piece where I have seen all my deer this year. My buddy jumped up the giant i drew back on he had three does with him and couldnt get a shot off. This gave me hope. Thursday morning we headed back to the same piece, where again my buddy sees three doe with no shot. I decide not to go out saturday due to forecasted winds and decide on hunting sunday and going for broke on that buck we had a few chance encounters with. I decide to mark my trail as it is a new portion of the piece i typically hunt. I was planning on slowly setting it up for next season. I get sitting about 5 minutes before legal light. I start with some of the typical calling i use (i never have luck on) minus a few does in the past. Around a little past 7 AM I decide to change up the cadance of calls to a way i have never tried. About 5 minutes later i see movement in the tree whips, i figure oh great another hunter. I look up and see a big body followed by a nice rack. I pick up my 870 switch off the safety and touch off. The buck drops but trys to scramble back up, so I quickly chamber another round and send one through the pump house and he stayed right there. My 4th career deer, first one with a firearm and very first buck 173lbs and 10 scoreable points with an 11th kicker point. Took me 10 years for this moment and he is headed for the wall. I should also add that this is not the buck that I drew back on earlier in the year, I believe this buck to be new to this piece do to rutting activity.
