yesterday i took the nicest archery buck of my life! very exciting - and gut wrenching as the story will show.
my dad and i sat in a piece in MA yesterday morning til 9:30 with no sightings. we decided to get out of there, grab a quick bite to eat and head into a different piece of woods for the rest of the day.
i got settled in along the swamp right around noon. at 1:30 i was looking around and real quickly, way off to my right i saw a doe sprinting across the swamp about 150 yards away. then i saw another doe appear at the wood line, but it just stood there. seconds later, a big buck steps into the swamp grass and starts walking toward where the first doe ran. i grabbed the buck roar and grunted several times as loud as i could. he immediately looks my way, then starts heading in my direction. he made no effort in being quiet as he made his way to me, scraping his antlers on anything in his way.
he continued slowly until he was about 50 yards away. then he stopped and looked around my general area. i grunted one more time which made him begin moving toward me again. he slowly came in, looking around, and finally made it to ~25 yards where i stopped him and let one fly.
the shot looked a little further back than i would have liked, but definitely still in the vitals. he ran off about 50 yards and i blew on the buck roar again. he stopped and stood there. he stood there for 10 minutes. then took some very careful steps away from me about 15 yards and laid down. he stayed there for 20 minutes, got up, and gingerly walked about 10 yards and laid down again. laid there for another 20 minutes or so, got up and slowly walked 20 yards and laid down again!
the entire time i'm watching this and thinking PLEASE DIE!!! well, he laid in that last spot for THREE HOURS before he got up again, tried taking a step but couldn't, and laid down - this time facing away from me.
as dark was approaching, it started to rain. that made me decide to get down and try to make my way over to him to get another arrow in him. i wear size 15 boots and have NEVER been a good stalker, but i thought the rain would give me just enough of an edge.
i got down and SLOWLY made my way to him. i got to what i thought was about 35 yards and he must have heard me because he stood up and looked right at me! i drew, guessed 35 yards, and let it fly. WHACK my arrow either hits solid bone or a rock. he bolts away from me heading out of the swamp and into the hardwoods (phew). i go look for my arrow and can't find it anywhere. figured it's either stuck in the swampgrass somewhere out of sight or stuck in the deer.
i couldn't believe he got up and ran. i didn't think he had it in him! i immediately began second guessing my first shot, thinking it was gut shot.
i text my dad and told him what happened. he met me and we eventually found a real good blood trail which probably means my second shot made contact.
instead of following it i said lets back out, grab dinner, and come back after. so we came back two hours later and got on the blood. very easy (for him - i'm red/green color blind) to follow the blood for the first 80 yards, then it slowed. about 130 yards into tracking, we jump him. we went forward about 5 more yards and heard him again. so he didn't go far at all when we jumped him. at that point it's time to back out and let him sit and hope the coyotes don't get him.
so i drive the 1+ hours home, get VERY LITTLE SLEEP, and up before sunrise headed back down. turns out he was dead less than 30 yards from where we backed out! my first shot passed through his liver (rage 3-blade). second shot drilled him high in the shoulder/neck area.
the 11 pointer dressed out at 167 pounds. never taken a deer w/ more than 10 points so very excited about this guy!
oh and i got the shot on film too - need to do the normal edits and i'll get it posted!
here are some pics:

Great video.....congrats on a fine buck ;D
-
hes right. you can be absolutley silent but the vids seem noisey. i thought it was harmonic vibrations.......it does it w/ both my cases, all weather and the open one. nice buck nice vid. it does seem far more blurry at the shot then my vids though. i have mine mounted on my top limb....zero recoil at the shoot and stays really clear.

Very nice! Congratulations!

Can you send me a link to some of your videos of you killing deer with your bow mounted GoPro? I want to see the difference. Maybe something is up with my cam.
-
my vids are tests on my 3d targets killing woodcock off my shotgun. no deer 'kills' as of yet, just does milling around under me. but you could get the jist of what im saying by watching them i think. how do i post em?? ide gladly do so. the few times ive tried to download to photobucket it was taking forever and i said f it. is there a better way?
and to make sure you understood me correctly, i wasnt taking anyhting away from your kill just an observation of the vids, we have the same cam but totally differant looking vids.
-
Nice job Bro! Heck of a story! Can't believe you had to sit and watch him for 3+ hours. Congrats on finding him!
-
wow that is an awesome story to go with your awesome buck...congrats to you......way to go.....AGAIN

actually, during the shot i do have the video zoomed in slightly which will decrease quality. the deer looked so small w/out zooming. i love the Go Pro, but i wish it had a built in zoom. even 2x would make it A LOT better.
just create a youtube account and u/l them.
thanks for clarifying, but i wasn't worried about that. i was worried that my camera may not be setup for optimal performance ;)
-
hey no prob. its pretty cool to get it on vid anyway! im pronb the most tech retarded person youll ever meet but a kid who works for me has a gopro and hes big into making vids of other weird chit so he helped me set mine up for the clearest vid i could make.....hell if i know though

From what I can read from the pros, they advocate using wide angle on everything....yes the deer will look small...but they do any zoom feature in editing...not with the camera....most cameras are set up to optimize video at the widest angle of the lens...also any movement of the camera will be far less noticeable....always enhances movement when in zoom mode, video or picture....just a couple thoughts...

i tried the wide angle but anything outside of 10 yards seemed like it was a LONG ways away. the buck in this video would have looked like a leave on the ground LOL.
i use my video editing software to handle the zoom like you recommend.
i think it's a matter of the camera being what it is - a cheap (relatively speaking), tiny camera that gets the job done ;D if i spent $1000 on a nice handheld i would have 10x better video, but i'd probably be too worried about filming the shot than actually focusing on the shot itself.
so for now and probably a few more years, the bow-mounted go pro will have to do. i'll be upgrading my bow after this season. maybe there will be less vibration on the new one :)

Like what ::) :o LOL
-
lol well, im not really sure lol he acts fudgey but he likes to take vids of hgimself hiking and mowing the lawn ??? not sure why lol he did a time laps video of the setup, pour and strip of the foundation we did this week, that was pretty cool actually. i think he hooked it to a remote control boat too or something and took it on tour of long pond?? i dunno, he has more free time then me i think.
-
HAHA, He sounds colorful ::)
-
Awesome story man...congrats on the deer.

I'll do the camera work....you find and shoot the deer.... ;D ;D ;D Now I just need to buy a good camo camera...LOL
-
They make some nice camo duct tape but yes you need a stationary camera so we can see the awesome shots you make....
Nice Buck and even better shot congrads.
-
Awesome buck! Glad you got him!
-
LOL a guy told me i should have someone come w/ me to film these hunts. i would never ask anyone to do that. it's the LAST thing i'd want to be doing during hunting season!!!!
-
Awesome archery harvest, keep stackin em up!
