Title: Updates on bow so far??
Post by: EarlySunrise on Sep 26, 2012, 09:54:24 PM
Not a bowhunter yet, getting into it next year. Gearing up and seeing what we can do.

BUT, still interested in what's happening in the woods and how you boys are doing. Stories, pics, whatever. I'm sure I'm not the only one who'd like to know...

Been out three times so far and had 4 deer well within range. One nice 6 pointer which I took a shot at and missed. Could of had something to do with the fact I was half way up a tree in my climber and spotted him heading towards me on a run. Pulled the bow up before he could spot my movement and took the shot at 25 yards leaning around the tree. Shot over him and off he went. I should practice that shot.  :-\   Scared the dickens out of him cuz he blatted 10-12 times as he ran off towards the bedding area and blew up my ambush. I let the spot cool off for week now and I'll see if I can stick'm come Saturday morning!!!

Had a nice doe with two yearlings under one of my ladder stands but I won't shoot a doe with young ones. Besides she busted me anyways hanging the bow back up.....she's a good momma!!!

haha ok just wanted to make sure you didn't miss those threads  :)

good idea getting people to talk about their season so far.  hopefully more chime in.

i've been out 12 times so far.  i had three does and a skipper come in opening day evening but i wasn't comfortable w/ any of the shots.  there were three does hanging around the 6 pointer i took.  and i had a small doe at 45 yards wednesday evening.  nine deer so far.  also, two coyotes  >:( >:( >:(

headed to NJ tomorrow morning for five solid days of hunting.  time to fill the freezer  :D

I have only gotten out 5 times have seen the same doe 3 times had her at 6 yards with no clean shot oppurtunity the next night had her at 20 yards but my arrow hit some hemlock on the way to her she ran ten yards and kept feeding, she ended up coming back the following weekend with no shot. I also have seen some real nice long beards with no shot. Moving another stand in an area I have been seeing alot of deer with a couple bucks moved in. wont be hunting until sat evening.

good luck in Jersey deerme

11 hunts for me so far. 8 does, 4 fawns, 5 bucks ( nothing bigger than a small 6 pt. ), 3 grey fox, 2 fisher, 23 turkeys with 3 nice Toms. Shot a funny racked 3 point the other day. Don't need him in the gene pool ;D.

Haven't been as much as I usually go still bass fishing alot but hanging rods up got one last tourney on Wednesday and that will be it then hitting woods hard and pumped for pheasant opening in am. Just wish it wasn't the way it is few birds many  hunters.

hunting a new stand I hung on sunday, tonight! The ground is blanketed in acorns and looks promising with fresh scat and tracks everywhere. The piece of woods is predominantly hardwoods with a couple swamps. One set of tracks has me especially excited as there is a nice spread to em and appear to be a buck  ;D I hope it pays off. Good luck to you guys if you head out today aswell

i just get worried that I would have a real hard time keeping on a blood trail and not be able to find the deer if I hit one  :-\ I hear you tho its alot like fishing, when its crappy outside usually they are biting
Title: Re: Updates on bow so far??

Never did make it back to where I missed a shot at the six pointer last week but instead ended up spending some time in one of the many other ladder stands I've got up...10 total. Nada thing moving on Saturday or Sunday which the rain had something to do with I'm sure. Owning my own business has it's benefits so I think I'll take off Thursday & Friday and hunt hard through till Sunday...weather permitting of course.

Anyone else notice the size of the White Oak acorn's with this years crop?  Holy Moly  :o found some the size of walnuts and there everywhere! What I like to do is rake the trails clean down to earth to all my stands so I can sneak in without being heard in the dark. Makes for easy acorn pick'n too !!! So come November the only acorn's the Deer will find are under my stands  8) Always produces at least one nice bruiser and a couple of FAT doe's to boot. In do time....In do time!!!

I was out this afternoon doing some scouting and I couldn't get over the acorns! You're right, they were gigantic. I needed a damn helmet to get through the woods. Found some sign though. Sneaking out of work a bit early never hurt anyone right?

thanks man he didnt spook really he jumped 10 yards and sat there looking around for about 10-15 minutes before walking slowly. Hopefully he comes back and I get another shot only the 2nd deer I have ever shot at and I probably just jumped the gun and shoulda waited to see where he was going to go but I figured he would not give me another shot at the time. Fingers crossed I will be hunting that stand tommorow evening

its possible I was calmer with the buck then when that doe came in haha maybe I am learning slowly how to keep calm. I was just worried he would see me draw back if I could have drawn back 5 seconds earlier he would have been smoked at 12 yards

had a hell of an experience last night.  i ran the grunt call a few times before sunset.  right around 6:10 i hear a deer approaching, slowly but surely.  he finally shows himself - a 4 or 6 pointer w/ a decent body (130 - 140 lbs).  not shooting this one as i'll go crazy not hunting the next 2+ weeks unless i shoot one of the 8+ pointers i have on the trail cam.

so i take some video of him and let him walk.  as he's leaving, i hear a branch break from where he came from.  another deer.  a couple minutes pass and i hear steps.  then nothing, then finally more steps.  the deer heads right under the hemlock below my stand.  at this point it's about 6:20 - 6:25 and hardly ANY light left.  finally the deer starts moving again and eventually steps out.  a GIANT wall hanger less than 25 yards away.  but there were so many branches and whips from me to him and w/ the minimal amount of light, i couldn't draw.  i watched as the big body slowly walked off.

hopefully we will meet again soon  :)

the smaller buck came back last night, this time w/ no calling and about 75 yards away from saturday's stand.  he came in to the red acorns at 5:05.  he walked in feeding to 15 yards, then smelled either where i had stepped or touched a branch, and became very alert.  he stood there for a few minutes, licking his nose, smelling the air, looking around, then walked back the way he came.

i waited a half hour and grunted a few times.  around 6:05 he came back around from behind me (he had circled me).   this time he was very alert, not interested in feeding at all.  he walked VERY slowly and often stood still for minutes at a time.

no sign of the big boy...i don't know how much longer i can hold off on pulling the trigger!!

here's some footage of the buck.  a decent sized 5 pointer.

I can't get over the massive quantity of huge scrapes and shredded rubs I have seen in the last few days! Things are starting to heat up! All the scrapes besides to have been on the edge of tote roads and skidder trails tight to thick hemlock cover and blueberry slash licking branches above are all bent and torn.

I can start rifle hunting Maine on the 29th I will be off work for about a month ;D. I will hunt Maine hard for a week then when ML opens on the 3rd in NH I will come back and stick with that...........

I buy the archery "special deer tag" for the extra $16.00 just for that very reason. In case I see a small buck like that. I buy all the tags NH offers. I can take either 3 bucks and two doe's or 3 doe's and two bucks. Never have to worry about not be able to hunt if I fill a tag. I have yet to be able to fill them all but did come close one year taken four. Then there is the two tags I get for NY.

Yep, I spend a lot of time hunting.  8)

I have filled them all a few times.I used both archery tags. I am all set with unit m tags. Not to exciting to me to go out strictly for does. I don't like the fact they get such an influx of hunters either. I would be pissed if L got extra tags so I won't do it to unit m guys. Just my opinion

i buy the special deer tag too - and i already used it.  if i took the 5 pointer i would have been done in NH until november.  with three deer in the freezer (and a fourth yesterday), it's making it a lot easier to pass on the smaller bucks!

based on his reaction to the cam, which was hung at my eye level (6'5" or so), he won't be back to that spot.  hope to run into him at some point...

Well got my first ever bow kill tonight nothing special just a small doe but I am pumped I should have had a little control cause I saw a decent buck last time in stand. This deer came crawling out of a nasty thicket immediately after I shot that thicket had other deer running through it wide open I suppose it was the buck but oh well at least the long wait is over its been a tough 8 years of bow hunting believe it or not I always whiffed my opportunities for some reason so hope fully it will be better from now on.

saw the 5 pointer again last night.  he was wondering around, feeding, 50 or 60 yards away from 4:50 to 5:15 or so.  then he walked off. he was unresponsive to grunting and bleating!  after i called him in twice in the last week or so, i guess he just doesn't care now?

dark approached and there was about 5 minutes left of legal shooting time, but i couldn't see.  i put my fanny pack on, put on my headlamp, unzipped the pack to grab my bow rope and heard something behind  me (i was facing the tree).  turned around and the big 8 pointer was standing 15 yards away smelling my tinks!  again, 10 minutes earlier and he would have been toast.  i stood as still as i could and watched him walk off.  hopefully not too bothered...

Congrats, pipes. I bet the next bow kill comes quick, seems like once you get that first one out of the way it all comes together.
