Looking forward to spending a lot of time in the woods this Fall. NY Northern Zone Bear starts 9/18 and early archery for deer is 9/27.
-
We open this Friday 8)
-
Im not ready yet..
I have a couple cams out and moved two ladder stands...
Still have 2 ground blinds to set up..
I still have some fishing to catch up on... ;)
-
Don't use cams very much but with 2 of them working right finally and batteries still good from FL, decided to put them out on the mountain just up the road, did it just before the storms hit to wash away any scent. Plan to concentrate my hunting there for deer after seeing some nice ones the past few years, and not as many hunters in the area. Got them set in 2 nice spots with acorns already dropping. Had a young buck get up and run off pretty close to the road at the first place, then a fawn further up. Second place had some bear sign, garbage spread out behind the houses, likely same one that has been around and went by my house one night.
-
Saw this young buck late season while stillhunting, knew I had pics as he was near the cam. A yearling 8 pointer, good genes and should be nice if still around.

This buck showed up at last light near the end of last season, maybe my last hunt, walked under me in the fading light. Finally got his pic in January.

-
If there still around they will be shooters...
Will make good beetle food... ;)
-
September 15th for whitetail archery in NH.
-
Started today. Skunked this morning should be good this evening. My buddy hunted our other spot. He saw 5 deer. 2 were bucks an 8pt and an 11pt. We agreed to pass on the 11. Young deer with great potential.
-
Awesome! Shoot straight!
-
I don't bow hunt, wouldn't shoot a bear and as Raq said still some fishing to be done. First hunt is usually early MZ season. All that being said, I know the season is getting close, I am starting to get the feeling to go for a ride just before dark to see a deer. Have been seeing some bucks around....h2l
-
Fun opener last night. I had a slow night just a few does but 3 of my buddies connected waited till this morning to find one. Was a a hard quartering away shot with no exit and zero blood. Deer died on the run only 150 yards was neat to see the dog work first experience with one.

How come the first two photos are in the same spot?
-
How come the first two photos are in the same spot?
We bring our deer to an old barn to butcher them and pics are taken there.
-
Wrong wind to hunt the buck I'm currently after so decided to try and shoot a doe.

Meat in the freezer Cody. Way to go..
-
Well done Cody! Arrow practice that tastes good after ;)
-
Great job really nice looking deer!!
-
Nice deer, lucky to get an early start in MD.
Got out looking for a bear yesterday and only found some deer. No bear sign where I was, they have been there the last few years, need to keep looking. Surprised to see a good number of acorns despite the widespread damage from gypsy moths caterpillars. Lots of reds still in the trees near the top of the mountain, they've been falling down low; a few whites/chestnuts here and there.
This buck was heading right for me, spotted me as I was moving closer for a better pic. Picked and marked a nice tree, will be back there.

Between work and the warmer than forecast temps I haven't been back in the woods since Monday, summer isn't giving up. Things are looking better after soon, highs in the mid 60s or less and 40s at night. Archery for deer starts tomorrow and I will be out stillhunting.
-
Good luck Jeff. Maybe you will be able to sneak up on the one in your last picture…..
-
4 does/fawns this morning, closest I could get without spooking them was 35 yards, too far and too many eyes. Moved ahead after they fed off and saw why they were feeding there: freshly dropped chestnut oak acorns. Then I looked up and spotted the first rub of the year, about 40 yards away near the top of the ridge, and he is hitting it from both directions. Picked out a nice tree and will be heading back there soon for the evening hunt with my climber, good thing we had more rain come through to wash away my scent.
-
2 does came in downwind around 5:30, feeding slowly below me, 1 got to 40 yards and was heading my way when the 2nd doe caught my scent and they both walked back where they came from tails up. They came up the same way as the deer this morning. Finally at sunset a yearling doe came down the ridge giving me an easy shot 5 yards from the tree... and I passed, 2 this morning were much bigger and it's only the first day. This is big woods with low deer density, so seeing 7 today is a good sign.

This is the view 100 yards from the tree...

Awesome Jeff! Can’t have a bad day with that view
-
Nice Jeff..
-
Awsome view and sounds like great action good luck hope you drop a monster!!
-
One hell of a view Jeff !
-
Still seeing does, and the only thing in range was a button buck right under me this morning, movement was late, after 9am.
Saw a fisher up in the trees on top of the mountain yesterday, pretty sure he was after red squirrels because they were making lots of noise just before that. Got a short video.
This evening I spotted a red fox running away 100 yards from me, started mouth squeaking and he ran straight to me, then realized he couldn't get whatever was making all the noise up in a tree.

Never really used cams much but trying more this year and just got a 3rd that needs to be set out. If anything they're great motivation.

Choot em Jeff… ;D
-
You may have noticed most are at night....
-
One buck looks good. Hopefully you have a run in with him.
-
I’ve grunted in 3 diff bucks this week to the base of each tree I was in. None were shooters but things are ramping up. Still in bachelor groups here but sparring is getting more intense and scrapes are popping up
-
Sat 4hours yesterday and only saw two does with 2 fawns…. Heading back out now..
-
I’m in the tree. Put something down!
-
You to . Good luck
-
The wind just stopped and the clouds are breaking up..
Should have went small mouth catching….. 8) 8)

;D
Did just have a doe come inspect my pop up blind. But she wasn’t to concerned. She’s 40 yards away eating apples now. Where’s the buck…….
-
But she keeps looking back here…
-
Now there’s 3..

-
I haven’t seen a thing. This 46 degrees is nice though
-
Yup I should have went catching. 8)
Had as many as five flatheads in the apples at once. Tucked myself in the corner of the blind sitting still waiting for some bone and nothing.. >:(
-
Any of you guys getting nailed with the EHD breakout? I hope not. Everyone I talk to says they haven’t seen a deer, period in a month just in daily activities
-
I hope you guys don’t get ehd it hit us last year and nocked the heard back yard and it effects bucks more then doe for some reason. I’m struggling to find mature bucks this year. We found over 30 dead bucks last year from it.
-
Unreal
-
None around here, at least none discovered in the mountains. The worst areas are south and west in NY, see the link below for numbers by county and a map.

-
was just reading about it says deer can develop tumors and look lethargic a lot of posts on here lately with deer with growths on them hopefully those were down south. Either way damn disease if its not CWD its EHD. Next it will be covid in deer.
-
Too warm to hunt lately but that will change this weekend, did stillhunt Wednesday morning and got close to only male animals, 7 toms/jakes and 1 nice young buck.
Yesterday was Indian summer and I took advantage, truck now had 4 new brake rotors and pads. Much easier than the old truck where I had to remove the axle nut and hub to change the fronts, rear was drums.
-
Nothing this morning. Fog rolled in couldn’t see 20 feet.. Sunny and humid now before the big storms hit..
-
When Do You Start? (Hunting)
when I get in the woods
LOL sorry couldn't help myself
::)
-
Fair enough
-
Doe down with my longbow, last doe I shot was 2014, pased on many since but want venison this year for certain.
Now it is raining.
-
Nice job Jeff.. Meat in the freezer is always a good thing…👍
-
Congrats Jeff!
-
Thanks. Heading back up the mountain to cart her down.
-
nice job!! keeping it simple old school still works congrats!!
-
Thanks. Heading back up the mountain to cart her down.
Throw it over your shoulders and walk out with it like the old time guides use to do…… 8) 8). ;D ;D
-
All quartered and on ice.
Work smart not hard. Bought the cart for OH because the uphill drags would be too much. Was more winded bringing the empty cart up the mountain, spent more energy on the way down trying the slow it down than I did pulling it.
-
Congrats Jeff!
-
Congrats....h2l
-
Man this wind blows…
Sitting inside the popup and I can still feel it swirling. And the leafs are blowing in circles and up and down the field… :P
-
Strsnge wind here, the is raging from the north, but up on the mountain light, swirling winds.
-
The wind hasn't been my friend at all this season....h2l
-
Not much wind today but the latest rain has messed me up, never seen the woods so wet. Hiked up to hunt the big scrape one last time before heading west... and nothing but a big puddle under the hemlock where they scrape. Still a good travel area but only a red squirrel so far.
-
Had a gorgeous 10 pt go by at 715, 60 yards in the swamp is not something I’m risking here with the bow.
-
Good call Frank i'm sure your paths will cross again.. Different story if you had the smoke pole!!
-
Good call Frank i'm sure your paths will cross again.. Different story if you had the smoke pole!!
Few days too early and a dollar short I spose, if we get this 2” of rain Saturday I’ll stay home and kill beers
-
No sense in pushing the distance with a bow, smart choice and early in the season.
-

I'm with ya there not supposed to get bad till afternoon probobly pound some ground early and then go work on my project in the garage.
-
That’s a poke at a deer with a bow. Hopefully he does the same thing during gun season
-
Loser Herb got a nice one this morning. I didn’t see any…. :P

-
He seems to do that, congrats to that Loser!
-
Yes he does…..
What a loser..
Now with his new bride I don’t even get to help him get it out .. 8)
-
Real nice buck congrats to him.
-
The ol man came down for a long weekend to hunt. Wednesday night he shot this 8 pointer
(https://i.postimg.cc/5QpywmhK/64066-F18-3-AE8-4-A39-82-E7-26-F0-EAF1-BA47.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/5QpywmhK)
Unfortunately Thursday night he hit one we couldn’t find. I’m pretty sure it was not a fatal shot hardly any blood. Just difficult not finding the bolt. Think buck fever got the best of him. Spent most of Friday grid searching the wood lot with no luck.

Sunday morning he redeemed himself and got another 8 and a doe.

-
That’s awesome! Congrats! That’s like 3 years worth of deer here haha
-
Congratulations to him Cody.. Nice bucks..
-
Congrats to all. Nice looking bucks...h2l
-
Well passed on a 4pt yesterday afternoon and let him walk.
Where’s all the big ones I had on my camera?
That’s why I have a love hate thing about them……
-
was out Saturday most of the day and Sunday passed on 2 different spike horns both big body deer thought for a second big does then saw the little spikes just barely above the ears. Alot of big deer being checked in this year with small racks heard of a 207lb 5 point being checked in.
-
Well got to one of the blinds with an active ground scrape 20 yards in front of me and one 25 yards to my left.
There for 15 minutes and a doe walks out and hangs around for 1/2 hour eating what’s left of the apples . She stopped in the scrap and peed … She looks behind her and walks into the woods and I’m thinking buck. No just a doe with a fawn. They hang around for to long and I see a tail in the thick stuff.. Out walks a big old doe with her tail up the whole time..
She walks over to the scrap and starts chewing and rubbing the licking branch and pees, does a kind of pawing, jumps and runs off..
At this point I have to pee myself.. ;D
So thinking the field is clear I kneel forward to pee in the jug.
Look to my left and a spike is using the other scrape. :o
-
Loser Herb does it again!
Nice work by your father Cody, maybe I should be hunting MD, lol.
Pee in the scrape Dom, no need for a jug. Cams are good motivators and make it easier to pass.
-
Congratulations to ypour dad for a good weekend of hunting. He always had a knack in finding deer up in Maine. Tell him I said Hi. ;D
-
Had the twin 4pts running around me yesterday afternoon. I really think if I had a good shot I would have taken one..

-
Tough to get a shot when they're running around.
-
It’s funny they didn’t stop at the scraps and were just wondering around behind the does. I was a teenager once.. So I know…. ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D 8) 8)
-
Exactly, those older bucks know they can take their time.
-
Cold and crispy walk in . A couple took off in the dark right behind the house as I entered the woods. Was just a doe and yearling in the apple field. Where’s the bucks????? >:(
-
22 degrees and not a stir in the woods, not even a Mouse.

-
Ha. Good luck Frank..
-
;D I’m gonna need it, likewise!
-
Got out Tuesday night and then hunted Friday and Saturday.
Tuesday night was a good night saw bunch of bucks including a nice 8 but not the one I was after.

Friday and Saturday were slow for me just young bucks. Friday afternoon I got in to the stand later as I was checking some cams making a plan for the evening and had a buck I’m after on it 30 mins before I climbed the tree.
My buddy shot one Friday night. Went and helped him find it Saturday mid morning. I’m surprised we found him dead and that he wasn’t still alive. He had hit him low and only got bottom of one lung.

He’s a pic I took of the deer last November from the tree.

-
Awesome!
-
Had one of the bucks I was after come in this morning. Got to about 35 yards and turned to follow a doe. I snort wheezed at him and he bolted. Thought he would be aggressive as he just pushed off a small 8 which was standing behind me. Don’t become an old buck making mistakes though.

Spent 11 hour days the last 2 days in a far off the beaten path swamp with a buddy, he connected on a 178 lb. yesterday at 330 we finally got it out this am via canoe. I’ll keep pounding the swamp
