357 mag ?? I seen a show a wile back about chasing bears away from houses they where using 12 gage shotguns with bird shot...worked for them but if my life depended on it I'd rather have a 30/06 rifle.

im thinking either a 45/70 marlin guide gun
or some type of short barreled shotty, with 5 slugs

any 12 or 10 guage would be perfect, i wouldnt get a rifle for defense, its a long range weapon, id stick with a shotgun
personally i hunt bear with a 12 guage with 3" mags

45/70 and a 12 guage are not comparable at short ranges ??? plus in thick cover when a rifle bullet hits a twig who knows which way it will go ??? if your using a gun for defense who cares which is better at 100 yards, now your talking which is better for hunting ???

you cant match the punch of the slug at close range, FPS can be whatever, bullet design is another story

alaskan guide use it because its good for close and long range, long being the majority of shots, and who is going to carry a slug gun for follow up close shots? i guarantee you ask any alaskan guide what they would rather have to track a wounded bear and the agree a slug gun is better

i have never had a slug come apartwhen it hits brush ???

your talking about lugging a gun around and again back to hunting, the question was defense :-\

If he is going in the bush to fish he needs to carry the firearm with him---right?  Lugging has nothing to do with hunting.   ;)

if we are talking about for fishing, i would go with a handgun, heck in most cases i would go with a handgun ???
im sticking with the 12 gauge as for a long gun though, my ex-inlaws are from alaska, alaskan indian, and majority hunt with 375's but carry 12 gauges with 3" mags in the truck for protection, except my ex father in law, he has the 500 :o talk about alot of gun, thats stoping power

the faster it is going the harder the hit ;)

you cant hunt :D
