What is your gun/ choke choice for turkeys
« on: Apr 23, 2006, 06:50:58 AM »
I  have been bouncing around with some different choke tubes for my guns and shot size and brand of shells but I can't seem to come up with any super pattern combo.
Was curious to see what you guys are having luck with?

I'm actually going to pattern my gun today, S.
I have three different shells I'm going to try in two different chokes.
I'll post my results if I remember...

s&m  always had good luck in my old shotgun with federal copper 4's, but I just got a Benelli Super Black Eagle.  I put a Cabelas heavyshot choke tube in it.  I patterned 12 ga 3 1/2in Win. ,Rem., Fed., and Hevi -Shot, all in heavyweight 5's.  After shooting each, you should count the total hits in a 30" circle, a real good pattern will place about 90% of pellets in that area.  Next count the total hits in a 10" circle.  Depending on the size shot you should ahve roughly 100 in that circle with 4's, 120 with 5's, and 140 with 6's.  Remember these numbers would be a goal for most setups.  After the expenses and a sore shoulder, the Wincester Supreme Elite Xtended literally shot heads and tails above all other brands.  My final results were, 299 total hits which calculated out to 88% of the shot in a 30" circle, and 120 hits in a 10" circle.  I also switched to a Red Dot Scope this year, after years of oopen sights.  It seems to be a plus so far.  Good luck to all and come on May 1.

Well- I had the same results as last year. Winchester Supreme 3" #4s through a full choke.
The super-full choke didn't perform as well for some reason.
How do you like that Benelli, Skundl?  ;)

I have a single shot NE Firearms 12 gauge with modified choke. I shoot 3 inch nitro-mags with #4 shot. It seems to work well for me.

D Man, It's sweet. Been talking about getting one for years, finally did it. I had a Rem 11-87 that i used for years, killed lots of birds with it, but was time to move on.  Good luck to you this season.

Remington 870 express 12 ga. 3 in. with a full choke (used to use a super full choke but found that the patternt was like shooting a slug at anything under 15 yards, too tight of a pattern for my liking)

Mossberg 835 3.5 inch with factory turkey choke and Rem Hevi-Shot #6s in 3.5 inch. Bagged about 20 birds so far with this gun. It's my 3rd Ulti-Mag over the last 15 years. Taken lots of game with it, including several deer, black bears, coyotes and turkeys.  I'm tagged out already, for VT and MA this year on birds. All were one-shot kills. -Jim

I started with a mossberg 500 youth with full choke and Federal Premium 3" number 4's.
I then went to a 835 and shot 3" 5's with the extra full turkey choke.  I tried the 3 1/2" in 4's and 6's but the pattern was not as good as the 3" loads.
I just won a Remington 870 super mag and I'm still using the 3" 5's with the factory full turkey choke in it.
