-
We have toms running around here that have never been hunted and they are old birds..I will give my son a chance at the first big one so you guys better watch out... ;D ;D
-
So last year it was all about getting other people their birds. I shot the jakes. This year its all about the contest!! watch out Issiah, I'm getting the state record thunder chicken!!
-
This will be my first year and I see its a combination of lengths and weight.. Whats the best way to weigh your bird? And do you need a picture of the scale???

I used a digital fishing scale to weigh mine last year. No picture is required of the bird on the scale(honor system) but if you can take a pic. I will say you must have a pic of you, the bird and weapon in one pic. A pic of the beard up against a ruler, more than one pic if there are multiple beards. One pic of each spur up against the ruler as well. All pics must be posted under the contest entires threadto be counted.
-
Another easy way to weigh your bird is to use a scale you would use to determine your own weight... Weigh yourself first, then then weigh yourself holding the turkey. Add up the difference and you have your bird's weight.

Thats what I will have to do beacuse my fish scale only goes up to 20 pounds and I know my turkey will be well over 20 pounds... ;D ;D ;D ::) ::) ::) ::)

Dacker... that is all we can ask for is optimism!!! We'll see... One of these years im bound not to get a turkey bc/c of spending my time on others... I should be able to tag out again this year!!
Guys dont be afrard to go TOOOOO the birds... YOu can talways wait for them to cme to you!! Get dirty, get nasty!!! LET THEM SOB'S HAVE IT!!!!!!!!!!!!
-
Yea, with my luck the neighbor will cross the property line and shoot the big one.... ;D ;D ;D ;D
But I really want to see my son get one, its his first year....
-

Been keeping an eye out for turkeys while yote hunting the past few days... LOTS of birds around this year again, im going to start going around and getting permission starting monday. Gotta renew some farms from last year, and hopefully knock down some new ones. Have 4 new hunters coming with me this spring, gonna be an interesting year. I am going to be purchasing a new canon high def cam corder before season gets here so I can put these guys on birds, and also on video! Looking forward to this season, should be lots of fun!

i say everyone gets a berkley or rapala scale for 2011(28-45 dollars)and maybe as it grows make a youngster division.and if there is only a few youngsters let them play for prizes and make us play for bragging rights.Im not sure a 13 year old has as much “PRIDE”as say 21 and older.just a few thoughts...if they suck forget i said anything.

I marinated the breast in italian seasoning last spring and cooked it on the grill, turned out good!!!I feel baking it ya get varied results from bird to bird, some turn out tough.... :-\
The legs are real tough as well so I dont even bother with them!! 8)
-
bring the breast meat in and get em smoked... Smoked turkey breast is AWESOME!
-
Your right there whitetail. We did up a couple birds in the smoker came out great
-
I like the breast either deep fried or I put it in the crock pot right along with the legs and slow cook it.

Kudos to any who got one this spring. I spent a lot of hours in the first two weeks out there, never heard a bird. Only saw two toms on rides scouting. Tough year.
-
Yea it was an awesome yr. Congrats to everyone. I passed a jake on monday at about 6 steps. Couldve got him easy but i figure i'll let him grow for next yr. He came in gobblin his head off right in my face. Awesome way to end the season.
-
The birds sure did behave strangely. I just got back from Maine, looked to roost birds 3 nights and not a sound. Hunted untill noon tuesday and wednesday with not a sound. I was told by friends that the birds shut down 2 weeks ago. Just an odd year with the earliy spring. I had a great trip anyway caught lot's of smallmouth and did about 250 mile's trail riding with the rest of the gang when they got there.
-
My mom had 6 big toms in the horse field today... I don't know how there getting through the woods with all the snow... Not going to be to much meat on those breasts come spring...
-
We haven't seen the bachelor group of toms since the snow got over a foot. Bet they are staying close to the corn piles... :o

They we be the size of chickens. ;D ;D

Bet I could count several hundred every morning on a short ride around town. In everyone's yard under bird feeders with all the snow though.
-
The wife found this one today. She thinks it might be a tough spring season....
