Buck Down

I shot a nice 8 pointer on Monday that weighed 172 LBS. Up to this morning I had hunted 3 days without even seeing a deer. My tree stand is on a nice hardwood ridge but this year no acorns. I was sitting my stand for 4 hours then I would mix it up and go to a different spot. On Monday it finally turned cold . It was windy also so it was hard to hear. I was standing up in my stand shivering and looking all around when I looked up and a Buck was right in front of me . He stopped right in front of me at 30 yards under the Hemlock trees in the red circle.
I quietly sat down and got my 1959 Marlin 30:30 up on the shooting rail. I let a corelockt fly just behind the front shoulder on a slight angle. He ran off and went out of site . I waited 10 minutes and felt good about the shot. I found gray hair and blood after walking 25 yards . He went down 75 yards away . I had hit one lung and it broke some ribs. I was so excited because this is my biggest Deer so far and I have hunted since 1978.
Then Tuesday my buddy shot a smaller 8 pointer that we had to work for. He shot it and had lots of blood so we started tracking it for about 1 hour. We backed out and took lunch to give him time . Well it was good that we did . We got back on the track which it took us up a big ridge . Sean saw him stand up and was able to hit him in the head and lights out. It turns out he hit the back leg but no vitals. We were glad that the Deer was found and not wasted. On to a Doe now .

Congratulations! Great deer. Gotta love those pre Crossbolt safety Marlins. Is it a .35 or 30-30?
Awesome write up and pics, thanks for sharing

Thanks, It’s a Marlin 30:30 that I put a Vortex scope on it . Very happy with the results . I had a peep site on it before but at 57 my eyesight isn’t what it used to be
ha ha! This makes 5 deer in 6 seasons starting to get it figured out .

Congrats, very nice deer. Thank you for sharing the story. My daughter has next week off from school, so hoping she gets a shot at the 10 or 11 pointer we've seen on camera
