2 Moose in 3 day's
« on: Oct 24, 2012, 03:27:20 PM »
This year my brother and grandfather were picked in the NH moose lottery. I went as a Sub for my brother and my dad went with my grandfather. Both permits were for the G zone. After many hours of scouting and stand hanging, opening day finally arrived this past Saturday.
Opening morning my brother and I went to a spot that my dad and I hung a couple stands the week before. My brother used to hunt years ago but he has kind of gotten away from it, so he told me in the truck on the way there if I was able to get a shot on one that he couldn't see to go ahead and take it, as he didn't think he was up to hunting all week. so I did. We could see each other from our stands but thick spruce trees separated us. 7am I let out a few bull grunts, 7:15 I do it again. shortly after I look behind me and spot a moose standing there but couldn't get a clear shot through some limbs, so I wait.  At this point I can hear him walking every once in awhile I assume he was munching on some brows. I give a few grunts with my mouth and he starts to make his way towards me. I knew at this point when he does clear the brush he is going to be close, like real close 20 yards maybe. 7:30 he makes his last step, he clears the brush, I fire a shot into the boiler room, he takes a few steps and I put 2 more into him. He goes down right there not 20 yards from my stand. 2 more to the back of the head and its a done deal.
He is a young bull 1 1/2 weighed in at 400lbs which is ok because we had to drag him out by hand, ATV's are not allowed in this spot.

My grandfather and dad help[ us drag out our moose so by the time we got it checked in, skinned out, quartered and put in the walk in cooler their day was done.

Monday Morning I went with them as a camera man. Walked into to a spot we decided on. Just getting settled down and my dad gives a few bull grunts, Instantly a bull lets out 2 loud hoarse sounding grunts. I don't think I will ever forgot that sound for as long as I live. I didn't even have time to get the camera out of my back pack when I hear the gun shot. One shot the thing fell like a sack of potatoes. It wasn't even 7:00 yet. We where able to drag this one with the wheeler. Nice easy drag, didn't even break a sweat. I took some pictures of the drag out so I will share them also.
This bull was estimated at 4 1/2 years old and weighed 550lbs dressed with a 42.25 inch spread.

My grandfather who is 79 years old, was there for all the scouting and the stand hanging and helped drag both Moose out. The place he was able and willing to walk was very impressive and I can only hope I am able to do half of what he can at that age. If I make it that long.
