I don't think it really matters when you hunt them. The season where I live open's in May and does not close until the following February. bear87

Hi guys, first post for me on this board.
I Shot a few grays last weekend, and one of them had a large grub like thing under it's skin that came off when I skinned it. Kind of freaked me out. I found this on the web that explains it pretty well.

http://botfly.ifas.ufl.edu/ABOTFLY/overview.htm

Old advice says to wait until after the first frost to hunt them, and they're usually gone by then. Believe it or not, the info I've seen is they're still safe to eat.

welcome to the site, this is a great place along with MFF and IS!

i have also been told not to hunt them until after the first frost? but if they are cleaned and cooked properly, grubs, etc... wont effect you at all ???

Geeze - maybe the grubs won't hurt me, but I don't know if I could stomach eating the squirrels after seeing that.

That's rabbits, J. NOT squirrels.
An old wives tale.

Don't you remember the post that Bob put up last year?
Shoot the tree rats and enjoy them. I'm going to the woods in the morning.  ;D

Went squirrel hunting/deer scouting again on sunday. Lots of sign for deer. The red squirrels were everywhere but no sign of any grays.
