I like the early southern bow opener but I don't like that they are expanding the antler restrictions!

I could have been sun tanning in my stand October first last year. I like the earlier opener though, if the weathers good I'll be out. The antler restrictions will always bother me in principle, but never effect how I hunt. I don't shoot spikes anyway, haven't even seen one in a few years even on camera.

As I said rifle opens the Wed. after Thanksgiving and I'll stay all 10 days if needed. I'm not sure of the county but the unit is # 11. We stay in Ottawa and hunt near Williamsburg. My friend has 2 leases 1/330 acres and  1/630 acres.

Has anyone heard if they moved the age for gun to twelve?
Title: Re: New rules offically put in place for this season
Post by: jperch on Jul 21, 2012, 11:06:23 AM
Bblaster, I believe that changing the hunting age, like legalizing crossbows, requires the state legislature to pass a law to that effect.  Changing the opening day of bow season was a change of a DEC regulation and did not require legislative action.  I have not heard anything about new laws for hunting age or crossbows; I think the legislature has left Albany for the summer.   jperch

I'm pumped about the early bow in southern zone. I hope they end up expanding the antler restrictions to more of southern zone and northern zone as well. It would be nice to start seeing more and more quality bucks. We always pass up all these small bucks just to watch other people kill them. What would really be nice is if they got rid of late muzzleloading..nothing worse than killing a bunch of does that are already bread.

Disagree with your take on muzzleloading BBT you archers want everything your way. Let's wake up and open archery for crossbows and see if we can get more people i the field. We are loosing more people than we are gaining. We all need to work together.

I'm not just a bow hunter, I muzzleload just as much as I bow hunt. I didn't say we should take away muzzleloading. IMO I don't think its right to kill does late season that have most likely been bread by a buck already.

Think of it this was BBT , when you shoot a doe , you lose next years fawn from her . Doesn't matter if she has been bred or not ..... know what I mean .... basically we dwindling hunters need to take more deer each , and this is what the new laws allow ..... More opportunity , and more ways to use the tags  ;) Personally , I hunt for a full freezer , not for the biggest rack on the wall .... To me that's just a who pisses farther contest , tho I do admire the accomplishment of a truly mature buck .

That's a good point, can't argue that. We hunt the same way down south..to fill our freezers then hunt horns up here.

I'm looking forward to bowhunting later into December instead of having to pull out my muzzleloader. 8)

Not sure if everyone is aware but the youth hunt isn't going to happen: http://www.outdoornews.com/July-2012/Did-Oct-1-opener-seal-youth-hunt-fate/ (http://www.outdoornews.com/July-2012/Did-Oct-1-opener-seal-youth-hunt-fate/)

Just wish instead of youth hunts and early openings  they'd leave the season open until January 1st so kids that are on vacation could actually have time to hunt. They all have a full week off with Chrstmas presents to use. I know some objections due to snow but it could be managed that if sufficient snow accumulates it gets shut down. And it would promote youth hunting more so than early openings when kids are starting fall sports and have very limited days off. And typically there's little safe ice.

I'm with you . How is it a bad thing ? I've heard Poachers will take advantage of it ..... Poachers are gonna POACH  >:( I guess the NY Bowhunters Ass. were at the fore front of the opposition , saying that the gunfire would turn the Bucks nocturnal  ::) ::) ::) Ok , the small game hunters are tromping around with dogs shooting a box of ammo off a day ...... I think its a good to get kids out but it doesn't affect me either way.

I had some older guys complaining about us "bowhunters" having to much time in the woods and taking away the youth season.

I told them I'd like to see a youth season the weekend before the gun season for deer. They blew a gasket and said its hard enough to get a deer and they don't want someone else shooting and scaring deer before they had a chance.

I think its a topic that we (hunters) will never agree on. Just like antler restrictions.

Why can't you bow hunt during ML? I know it's a whole different hunt up there, but you should be able to use the bow during any season.

I'm hoping the antler rest. will force hunters to get a better look at the buck and then allow for a more accurate shot. Sometimes young hunters fire a quick shot as soon as they get a glimpse of an antler, which can lead to an inaccurate shot and a wounded, unrecovered deer.
