Title: getting ready for fall
Post by: trapperjohn87 on Jul 13, 2012, 01:51:44 AM
Let's get started. Just wondering how many of us out there have started running our hounds to get them tuned up and in shape for the hunting season. Me and my friend mark (a hunting guide from maine) started wednsday night july 12 and had great results. I have a feeling its gonna turn out to be a great coon season this year.

Ive only got one hound and he is 12 years old. I wont take him out untill the season starts. Where are you folks from? I hunt Southern Maine and Rebel does pretty well. He is an awesome strike dog(rig hunting) long bawls on track and the best locate you can imagine. Solid as a rock on the tree with steady chops.

Kudos to the dog for diving right in - But hopefully he's learned a painful lesson about which of those woodland creatures he can mess with.  Mine (he only hunts for food and place to sleep) hasn't had any run-ins with a porcupine, but his learning curve hasn't been great with skunks...

Heres the Red dog didnt have any inside his mouth but had them all acroos his belly and missed his junk by inches.Ran the entire length of the Inside of his tail..Pretty lucky hopefully he learned a lesson. Was his second time so who knows..LOL

Good looking hounds there(minus the quills). How old are they? Ive never owned a red bone but they have always been my favorite looking hound. My dog loved the old quill pigs when I got him. Had to take him to the vets twice to have quills removed from the inside of his throat. He has not touched one in about 8 years.

They both just turned 2.Ive had redbones for 25 years and never have had any major trash problems with them..This is his second time getting into one,the first time he only had about 10 quills in his nose.Thought hed give up on them but now im not too sure.Ive been hunting black dogs for about 6or7 years now cuz its gotten so hard to find a good redbone..Really like them but have had all kinds of problems with them and porkys..
