Post by: CAPTJJ on Sep 08, 2021, 04:29:06 PM
Looking forward to spending a lot of time in the woods this Fall. NY Northern Zone Bear starts 9/18 and early archery for deer is 9/27.

Don't use cams very much but with 2 of them working right finally and batteries still good from FL, decided to put them out on the mountain just up the road, did it just before the storms hit to wash away any scent. Plan to concentrate my hunting there for deer after seeing some nice ones the past few years, and not as many hunters in the area. Got them set in 2 nice spots with acorns already dropping. Had a young buck get up and run off pretty close to the road at the first place, then a fawn further up. Second place had some bear sign, garbage spread out behind the houses, likely same one that has been around and went by my house one night.

Saw this young buck late season while stillhunting, knew I had pics as he was near the cam. A yearling 8 pointer, good genes and should be nice if still around.

This buck showed up at last light near the end of last season, maybe my last hunt, walked under me in the fading light. Finally got his pic in January.

Will make good beetle food...   ;)

Started today. Skunked this morning should be good this evening. My buddy hunted our other spot. He saw 5 deer. 2 were bucks an 8pt and an 11pt. We agreed to pass on the 11. Young deer with great potential.

I don't bow hunt, wouldn't shoot a bear and as Raq said still some fishing to be done. First hunt is usually early MZ season. All that being said, I know the season is getting close, I am starting to get the feeling to go for a ride just before dark to see a deer. Have been seeing some bucks around....h2l

Fun opener last night. I had a slow night just a few does but 3 of my buddies connected waited till this morning to find one. Was a a hard quartering away shot with no exit and zero blood. Deer died on the run only 150 yards was neat to see the dog work first experience with one.

We bring our deer to an old barn to butcher them and pics are taken there.

Nice deer, lucky to get an early start in MD.

Got out looking for a bear yesterday and only found some deer. No bear sign where I was, they have been there the last few years, need to keep looking. Surprised to see a good number of acorns despite the widespread damage from gypsy moths caterpillars. Lots of reds still in the trees near the top of the mountain, they've been falling down low; a few whites/chestnuts here and there.

This buck was heading right for me, spotted me as I was moving closer for a better pic. Picked and marked a nice tree, will be back there.

Between work and the warmer than forecast temps I haven't been back in the woods since Monday, summer isn't giving up. Things are looking better after soon, highs in the mid 60s or less and 40s at night. Archery for deer starts tomorrow and I will be out stillhunting.

Title: Re: When Do You Start?

4 does/fawns this morning, closest I could get without spooking them was 35 yards, too far and too many eyes. Moved ahead after they fed off and saw why they were feeding there: freshly dropped chestnut oak acorns. Then I looked up and spotted the first rub of the year, about 40 yards away near the top of the ridge, and he is hitting it from both directions. Picked out a nice tree and will be heading back there soon for the evening hunt with my climber, good thing we had more rain come through to wash away my scent.
Title: Re: When Do You Start?
Post by: CAPTJJ on Sep 27, 2021, 08:35:23 PM
2 does came in downwind around 5:30, feeding slowly below me, 1 got to 40 yards and was heading my way when the 2nd doe caught my scent and they both walked back where they came from tails up. They came up the same way as the deer this morning. Finally at sunset a yearling doe came down the ridge giving me an easy shot 5 yards from the tree... and I passed, 2 this morning were much bigger and it's only the first day. This is big woods with low deer density, so seeing 7 today is a good sign.

This is the view 100 yards from the tree...

Still seeing does, and the only thing in range was a button buck right under me this morning, movement was late, after 9am.

Saw a fisher up in the trees on top of the mountain yesterday, pretty sure he was after red squirrels because they were making lots of noise just before that. Got a short video.

This evening I spotted a red fox running away 100 yards from me, started mouth squeaking and he ran straight to me, then realized he couldn't get whatever was making all the noise up in a tree.

None around here, at least none discovered in the mountains. The worst areas are south and west in NY, see the link below for numbers by county and a map.

was just reading about it says deer can develop tumors and look lethargic a lot of posts on here lately with deer with growths on them hopefully those were down south. Either way damn disease if its not CWD its EHD. Next it will be covid in deer.

Too warm to hunt lately but that will change this weekend, did stillhunt Wednesday morning and got close to only male animals, 7 toms/jakes and 1 nice young buck.

Yesterday was Indian summer and I took advantage, truck now had 4 new brake rotors and pads. Much easier than the old truck where I had to remove the axle nut and hub to change the fronts, rear was drums.

All quartered and on ice.

Work smart not hard. Bought the cart for OH because the uphill drags would be too much. Was more winded bringing the empty cart up the mountain, spent more energy on the way down trying the slow it down than I did pulling it.

Not much wind today but the latest rain has messed me up, never seen the woods so wet. Hiked up to hunt the big scrape one last time before heading west... and nothing but a big puddle under the hemlock where they scrape. Still a good travel area but only a red squirrel so far.

The ol man came down for a long weekend to hunt. Wednesday night he shot this 8 pointer

Unfortunately Thursday night he hit one we couldn’t find. I’m pretty sure it was not a fatal shot hardly any blood. Just difficult not finding the bolt. Think buck fever got the best of him. Spent most of Friday grid searching the wood lot with no luck.

Sunday morning he redeemed himself and got another 8 and a doe.

was out Saturday most of the day and Sunday passed on 2 different spike horns both big body deer thought for a second big does then saw the little spikes just barely above the ears. Alot of big deer being checked in this year with small racks heard of a 207lb 5 point being checked in.

Well got to one of the blinds with an active ground scrape 20 yards in front of me and one 25 yards to my left.
There for 15 minutes and a doe walks out and hangs around for 1/2 hour eating what’s left of the apples . She stopped in the scrap and peed … She looks behind her and walks into the woods and I’m thinking buck.  No just a doe with a fawn.  They hang around for to long and I see a tail in the thick stuff..  Out walks a big old doe with her tail up the whole time..
She walks over to the scrap and starts chewing and rubbing the licking branch  and pees, does a kind of pawing, jumps and runs off..
At this point I have to pee myself.. ;D
So thinking the field is clear I kneel forward to pee in the jug.
Look to my left and a spike is using the other scrape.   :o

Pee in the scrape Dom, no need for a jug. Cams are good motivators and make it easier to pass.

Had the twin 4pts running around me yesterday afternoon. I really think if I had a good shot I would have taken one..

Tough to get a shot when they're running around.

Cold and crispy walk in .  A couple took off in the dark right behind the house as I entered the woods.  Was just a doe and yearling in the apple field.  Where’s the bucks????? >:(

Got out Tuesday night and then hunted Friday and Saturday.

Tuesday night was a good night saw bunch of bucks including a nice 8 but not the one I was after.

Friday and Saturday were slow for me just young bucks. Friday afternoon I got in to the stand later as I was checking some cams making a plan for the evening and had a buck I’m after on it 30 mins before I climbed the tree.

My buddy shot one Friday night. Went and helped him find it Saturday mid morning. I’m surprised we found him dead and that he wasn’t still alive. He had hit him low and only got bottom of one lung.

He’s a pic I took of the deer last November from the tree.

Had one of the bucks I was after come in this morning. Got to about 35 yards  and turned to follow a doe.  I snort wheezed at him and he bolted. Thought he would be aggressive as he just pushed off a small 8 which was standing behind me. Don’t become an old buck making mistakes though.
