I wouldn't day it's BS that you need a safety on to cycle the bolt.  Worked for 10s of millions of Mausers, including mine.  Some are a three position safety - right is full on, center is able to cycle bolt, but not let the firing pin go, and left is ready to go.

Is this an old version?  On my 700 I can remove the bolt with or without the safety on...not sure when Remington changed that feature...?  I believe you, I have no reason not too, but I have never heard of this happening other than the CNBC show and your experience...I know lots of people who use and have used 700's for years...I have always used model 760, 7600, 742 pumps and auto's until I bought my model 700... ???
chances are its either a 660 or model 600,maybe a 721

I have never had problems with my Remington. Plus mine is shooting 1/2" groups at 100 yards so I'm keeping it.  ;D

It's a 700. The guns never done it before and may never do it again, but I didn't like it.

My question is why, after almost 50 years of production are there problems with this gun. I've never heard of any before now. All of a sudden there are
multiple reports. I can't remember the guys name but he was a sniper in the sixties, he carried one through some of the worse conditions in the world.
and never had a failure or problem. Mine will be in my hands until such a time something proves it unsafe.

Well I must say after having watched the "Documentary Show" in the national news media and then watching a "local Maine news show" regarding the issue of the Remington Model 700 suddenly and without trigger pull, firing, that I stand corrected.  My previous post contended that CNN and/or CNBC was exaggerating the facts and capitalizing on a once in a million incident to create and promote sensationalism which they are experts at in generating profit!  However, after having listened to expert mechanical engineers who were former employees of Remington who warned corporate officials of Remington that they had a serious issue with this model firearm and proposed a simple $.15 cent fix which was declined by upper management and owners of Remington as being too expensive, well let's just say I am extremely disappointed.  The local news channel 6 account (during the week of 11/20/2010) of a Maine hunter who had purchased a Remington Model 700 early in 2010 and then took the rifle out for it's debut this fall during firearms deer season and experienced this random and unaccounted firing without any trigger pull raised the hair on the back of my neck.  This is flat out, hands down unacceptable!  Yes I agree with all on this forum that safe gun handleing is paramount, treat the gun whether or not it is loaded as if it is loaded at all times, keep the barrel pointed in a safe direction, always!
The strange thing is that I sold my Remington Model 700 30ott6 one year ago to a friend that turned around and re-sold it, where it is now I have no idea.  I own a Winchester Model 70 in 30ott6 and a Browning A-Bolt in 30ott6 and have never had an issue with these guns firing on their own without trigger pull.  Needless to say I am very happy that I no longer own that Remington Model 700 30ott6!  When the gun dealers refuse to buy Remington Model 700's until the product is fixed with the proper modifications, this will force the issue, in the mean time Remington needs to "man up" and do the right thing or face extinction as a business!
