.308 too much?
« on: Mar 07, 2009, 08:15:05 PM »
I'm going coyote hunting and plan on bringing my Browning .308 with 150 grain.  Is this too much power for a coyote?

no, not if you just want to kill them. If you want to sell the fur, then yes its a bit too much IMO. How are you hunting them, caller, bait, hounds?

Coyotes are tough animals. The first one i shot, i put a 12 ga slug right through her teeth and the slug went down her neck and blew off a front leg, and she was still trying to run away when i finished her.

First i could care less if you believe me or not, second have you ever hunted coyotes with a digital caller ?

If you have you wouldn't be playing with bait.
A digital caller will put the yotes right in your lap if you care to.
That's whats fun about using a shotgun, its up close and personal when you can look a yote in the face, before you shoot it.

The first yote(s) I ever called came in about 10 feet from me. Was looking at each other eye to eye. Another one was about 10 yards away. It was a bit dark and I was all camo'ed up. I lifted my rifle and fired. it dropped right there. It was so close all I saw was fur in my 3 power scope. I turned and shot at the other yote but hit a tree. I turned to the first dog and it was trying to crawl off, so I shot it again. I got my remote to play distressed puppy cries to try and get the other dog back. During that time that dog crawled off into the swamp and I never recovered it. Two rounds of 7.62x39mm from my mini-30 and it still crawled off, so I agree, they are very tough animal. I now use a 12ga. with #4 buck shot.

I haven't hunted coyote with a caller because I'm only 17 and going out for the first time with my friend.  We're going to do it the old school way and hopefully comeback with a few pelts.

Tell me about it lol.

I thought it was sporting to hunt them with a muzzle loader, untill three came in one day.
I was SOL.

Any caliber that can bring them vermin down is a good caliber.
I own a couple of .308s myself ,Springfiel M1A1 and a Armalite, and that would be the round of my choice. ;D

Hey James I was seriously looking at callers last year but just did not know enough. Tell us more about digital callers. How you use them - brands -- pro - cons etc.
