7.62x39 As a Deer hunting round
« on: Dec 06, 2009, 02:42:37 PM »
I have been thinking of replacing my Ruger .44 mag brush gun with a Ruger Mini 30 chambered in 7.62x39. I just dont know if it has enough popcorn! Any thoughts? Guess I have almost a year to ponder.

With the right bullet I would feel better about long shots than with the .44.  Having said that, for 95% of the shot we get in Maine the .44 works great.

Seen that mini 30 in action a couple years back, it did fine. I think you got a little more range with it than the .44 but the new ammo (Leverolution) out for the .44 might change things a little. The gun doesn't kill the deer, it's the bullet and the person pulling the trigger. 8) 8)

how long a shot are you looking for i have taken deer down at 150 yards with my rugger 44  200 grain bullet  most of my shooting is less then 100 yards so went back to the 240 and i would still take a 150 yard shot with that

Should be fine the round is very similar to the 30-30.
I would use a soft point bullet.

Same round that my buddy shoots out of his SKS, and it puts deer down good! Like said before, similar to .30-30, with more velocity.

I use a mini-30 in the thick and have taken a few deer and coyote. You shouldn't use FMJ for hunting. Hornady now makes a V-max bullet that is much better for hunting.

I've killed deer and caribou with my 7.62X39.  With a decent shot they drop in their tracks just the same.

That 7mm08 will drop moose without a problem. Fine all around gun. Great deer gun. 8) Get out there and hunt this fall.

Yup. Thats exactly the setup i use for deer and i have dropped every deer ive shot with it. I love that caliber. I wouldnt hesitate to shoot any big game animal in north america with it. It has a pretty good punch.

Cabelas had a sale on the new 7.62x39 154 grain soft tip for $5.99. I was using the Russian 122 grain hollow points
and with a well placed shot, both times the deer dropped where they stood. American Eagle is making them with
brass cases so now I can reload them ;D Last weekend I tried the 154 grain on a 1/4" steel plate, at 100 yards it almost went thru :o I have a Preban Norinco Hunter AK with the 20" barrel and a Simmons scope. I was really surprised
by the 1"1/4 groups I can get with this AK. The other AKs I've had were the single spring trigger type, this Hunter
has a double spring elongated trigger and it is SWEET ;D One of the guys that target shoots with me wanted a
new AR for Varmit hunting, he asked me if I was interested :o It came with the original box, a 5 round mag, a 30
round mag and a 75 round drum mag. It is a great gun in the brush and it will work on any kind of Varmit, no matter
how many legs they have ;D

I seem to recall an article a couple of years ago from a hunting publication regarding the 7MM 08 possibly being the best all around cartriage for whitetail hunting in the Maine woods. Personally I will never give up my .284 Micro Medallion, I use the Winchester 150 grain Power points. I have taken numerous deer and a moose with it.
