Adirondack Deer Hunting info and question
« on: Jan 13, 2010, 11:21:53 AM »
hey guys and gals,

Just wondering if I could get any helpful info on hunting deer in remote sections of the adirondacks.  I'm looking for the big woods that are remote where I could find larger deer understanding that the population in these areas are lilmited.  i want to do some still hunting and tracking.  What part of the state? what towns are close by that offer camping, lodging, cabins, etc? Are the adirondacks accessible via gravel roads and to out of state hunters if we purchase the license? Have the areas been cut? what is the overall population in these areas? Any help would be greatly appreciated.  Thanks ---Maine Hunter

Lots of BIG WOODS around the Raquette Lake Blue Mountain Lake area..But the question is why would you want to come to NY when Maine is supposed to have the biggest deer around??

Bigbuck--these are big woods for NY---go on google Earth or terra-server and check out the airial view of that area, the state has dirtroads where go can drive between Indian Lake and Limekiln,-you can tent it or have a truck camper but no pull behinds last I knew---from there you can hike or backpack way back---

In all honesty, Maine is in serious jeopordy of losing its once prized deer population.  The big woods here have very limited deer now (never many in the 1st place but unheard of now) and they are all too easily accessible so the pressure is un real.

not quite, but I enjoy hunting in the Salerno , Benoit style thats all.  I don't need the exact area. Just a point in the right direction. Looks like they hunt great areas with nice deer.

I'm not trying to sound like an a-hole... but i wouldn't waste your time. The deer population in maine may be declining, but NY i can guarentee is worse to hunt. The last two years have been worse and worse in the northern zone as well. My uncles hunt the Indian Lake area hard, and have not seen much at all the last couple years. 2 deer in two years, though they do only shoot 6's and bigger. Combined, they have about 75 years up there, and they are smart guys that know what they're doing. There's big ones up there, but coming for a week and trying to find one is almost impossible. I would stay in maine and find some new areas to hunt if i was you. The adirondacks are awesome and the scenery would be worth the trip alone, but if you see 2 does you'de be doing well. One uncle does have one amazing funky adirondack buck with split tines, kickers, and a big drop tine though. One of the coolest deer i've seen. I'll try to take a picture sometimes
