i've had the rifle for 4 years and have yet to put a round in the chamber. whats the better grain and brand round for deer hunting?. most recent experience with firearms comes from the Army with ups and downs from a M16, to shoot it til its down with the .50 cal. any help is greatly appreciated.

I shoot 140 grain remington core lok out of my gun they shoot well, havent had a deer run away after gettin hit with it.
-
and with the 140 grain what distance to you have the rifle zeroed at? i was thinkin possibly 150 yrd...i'm more of the sit and wait style of hunter, well that is not inclucing the pheasant trips..thats where the exercise comes in :P
-
i go about an inch high at 100 yds. thats practical for me and where i hunt. I rarely would have a chance to shoot a deer much further than 200yds.
-
do you have a link or any input as to a trajectory path of a 7mm-08 round? straight with a gently down slope or does it go up and down?. the place where i've seen alot of deer tracks and plan to drop my first deer has about a 250-350 yrd range between the only two viable hide spots that would give me a crows nest look at the whole gravel pit. just curious what the round does

Daddyx2 check this site out www.udarrell.com/7mm08_140.HTML (http://www.udarrell.com/7mm08_140.HTML). Good luck on getting your first deer and welcome to the site.

I would start with a 140gr. bullets and work up a load that shoots well, then try some other bullet weights???

thanks for the help guys. looks like i'll be finding some dirt pit or somethin near the house to put some rounds through it when once i get the scope on her. 28 bucks for box of twenty is a little pricy hope i get it zeroed in 5 or less :-\

Yeah tell me about it. I hate that. Prices for ammo just keep going up, wonder if we'll ever see em come back down :-\

i just got a sling and a bipod mounted to 'tonya', (thats what i call my 7mm08 :P), gotta wait for next week to get the scope on her tho. should be prime shootin shape by then...
-
The only way I can afford to shoot a lot is by reloading,I was lucky enough to buy primers before they became scarce....DD ;D ;D ;D
-
are the principles of reloading rifle rounds the same as shot shells? cuz i've reloaded everything from .410-12's before

I haven't reloaded shotshells, but I am reloading my 30-06 rounds. The two main differences I know of are the tollerance of the charge and the neck spacing. I highly recomend hand loading to anyone who wants to shoot accurately. Between glass bedding my M77 and finding the right combo of bullet/charge I closed my 100yd group from ~2.5" to under 1", and I'm not the best shot.
-
..... and I'm not the best shot.
dont turkeys require a good shot? lol
-
The 10ga leaves a little more room for error ;D. And I'm 1 for 2 on Toms, missed my second one (also passed a few).
-
3 for 3 with my 10gauge. Love that ol cannon. Doesnt pattern well on paper but it sure lays turkeys out with no problems. ;D
-
should just get a side by side sawed off 10ga coach gun and see what that does for "
pattern" :D

I dropped the hammer on the 10ga today, didn't hardly feel it. But my girlfriend was faceing the other way not knowing I was going to shoot and almost jumped out of her boots :o.
